With Xavi Hernandez now the new Barcelona manager, the next step in trying to pull the club out of the mire in which they currently find themselves is reinforcing the squad.

The Catalan side is in the middle of an injury crisis with the likes of Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembélé and Pedri bit by the injury bug. Strengthening the front line is going to be a top priority.

Therefore, Barcelona are ready to dip their toes in the upcoming winter transfer window.

Barcelona manager will have a say in terms of transfers

According to Sport, the club is prepared to incorporate up to three signings once the window opens. Those possible players include the likes of Dani Olmo and Raheem Sterling.

Olmo has been on their radar since before the start of the season. The Spanish midfielder enjoyed a successful Euro 2020 with Spain as well as with RB Leipzig. However, his signing is seen as complicated considering the amount Leipzig demand.

The Sterling option seems more possible at the moment. The Manchester City forward has been out of favor under Pep Guardiola for the last season-and-a-half and may be looking for an opportunity somewhere else to get more playing time.

Barcelona would be interested in a loan for Sterling. It would be up to City to see if an agreement can be reached. A loan is more viable considering Barça have little money as it is. Xavi is not going to have a “war chest” to spend as he sees fit.

Signings during the winter transfer window have rarely worked out for Barcelona. Some recent examples include Kevin-Prince Boateng and Jeison Murillo. The former was signed as a striker and rarely played. The latter also succumbed to the same fate.

It seems a more likely scenario that Xavi will have to make use of the Barça B players when it comes to reinforcements. Once the summer rolls around, all the attention can turn to who Xavi wants and which players he considers will fit his style of play.
