Barcelona’s long-term injury woes continue to pile on

The injury problems at Barcelona have been well documented and resulted in the reallocation or firings of physios in medical personnel within the club. Unfortunately for Xavi and the team, the hits keep on coming.

Barcelona revealed that midfielder/right back Sergi Roberto is set to undergo surgery for the “injury he sustained to his rectus femoris muscle in his right thigh.” The surgery will take place in the coming days in Finland under the supervision of the club medical staff.

The player hasn’t been part of the team’s plans since the loss against Rayo Vallecano that saw Ronald Koeman get fired. It is worth nothing that Sergi Roberto had been given the medical green light and was thought to have a chance at playing the Champions League match against Benfica.

That turned out not to be the case as he suffered a relapse and without any improvement, the choice has been made to opt for surgery. While no timetable was given as to recovery, he is expected to be out of action for up to four months.

According to Sport, the choice to opt for surgery came a day prior after Sergi Roberto met with Xavi and a member of the medical staff. He also spoke with former Barcelona player Andres Iniesta who went through the same procedure last season and assured Roberto that he would be able to play without any problems once he recovered.

The injury, and time off, comes at the worst possible time for the 29-year-old. His contract is up at the end of the season and despite some early talks that an agreement was close, those talks have stalled and every scenario is on the cards.

For Barcelona, it means another player out for the long-term. The only silver lining is Xavi does have options in midfield. As far as right-backs go, Sergiño Dest should be fit soon and Dani Alves will be a factor once he is allowed to play come January.
