Barcelona face another tough ask in the Europa League

Crashing out of the Champions League in the group stage was an embarrassment for Barcelona. However, at the very least, it did mean they could possibly avoid another humiliation at the hands of a European giant.

The Europe League, on paper, looked more accessible for the Catalans should they want to make the Champions League next season. Their current run in La Liga has already put that prospect in serious doubt.

Despite hoping for a reprieve, Barcelona’s European adventure has seen them drawn against another tough opponent in the form of Napoli.

The Europa League draw took place on Monday with the Catalan side drawing the fourth place team in Serie A.

The Italian side was the most difficult team Barcelona could draw and now those fears have become a reality. A reality that they must now confront.

The last time these two teams faced off was back in the Champions League in 2020. Barcelona won the second leg at the Camp Nou thanks to some magic from former player Lionel Messi. Unfortunately, the good times ended there as it was the same season they were thumped 8-2 by Bayern Munich.

Barcelona won’t be able to count on Messi this time around but the tie does involve another Argentinian great. The late Diego Armando Maradona played for both teams so that will be one of the storylines heading into the match.

The first leg will take place at the Camp Nou on Feb. 17 with the second in Napoli a week later.

While an air of pessimism is surrounding the club and they may not be seen as favorites, Barcelona should have the likes of Ansu Fati and Pedri back. They’re also expected to make a couple of signings during January so it could be a different — better — side come February.
