Three talking points from Barcelona’s win over Elche
Barcelona needed comeback to beat Elche 2-1 over the weekend
For the first time this season, Barcelona won their fourth consecutive game when they beat Elche 2-1. But it was by no means an easy victory.
The Catalans had their share of chances in the first half but failed to convert. Elche went ahead late in the half courtesy of Fidel Chaves, stunning the Blaugrana.
Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez made some adjustments coming out of the break which included subbing on Ferran Torres in place of Gavi.
His changes worked as the former Manchester City forward poked in a pass from Jordi Alba to tie the game.
Torres had a couple of opportunities to put Barcelona ahead but he sprayed one shot and another was blocked by the Elche keeper.
But Xavi pressed all the right buttons as another substitute, Memphis Depay, was crucial in getting the winner.
The Dutch forward chased down a ball inside the box with an Elche defender right behind him. He tried to flick the ball before it ran out of play and as he did, Antonio Barragan appeared to stick out his elbow and made contact with the ball.
While there was no initial call on the pitch, the referee went to the VAR monitor and went on to award Barcelona a penalty.
Memphis stepped up to take the penalty and struck it well and high to give Barcelona the winner.

There was plenty to talk about after the match, including some non-penalty calls that Elche felt should have gone in their favor. Here are three takeaways from Barcelona’s comeback win.
