Tuzos, Tigres separating themselves from the pack
Still considered legitimate contenders
5. Cruz Azul (—)
5-2-4, 17 points (17 goals for, 14 goals against)
The Cementeros might have the deepest roster in Liga MX but Juan Reynoso has shown a tendency to get his rotations wrong. His decision to start Bryan Angulo up front against Pachuca proved to be a mistake.
6. León (+1)
5-3-3, 18 points (11 goals for, 11 goals against)
The Esmeraldas and coach Ariel Holan badly needed a win and they got it. But as it came against a poor Mazatlán FC side, we must take it with a grain of salt. On the positive side, surprise starter Santi Ormeño rewarded Holan with a goal.
7. Monterrey (–1)
4-3-3, 15 points (13 goals for, 9 goals against)
The Rayados turned in a dud against the Tigres, their first setback since Víctor Manuel Vucetich took over. Monterrey had won three straight with “King Midas” in charge.
8. Santos Laguna (—)
3-3-5, 12 points (17 goals for, 19 goals against)
The Guerreros saw their three-game win streak come to a halt but must be tickled pink after claiming a point when it looked all was lost at Puebla.
9. Guadalajara (—)
3-4-4, 13 points (16 goals for, 15 goals against)
The Chivas squandered a chance to avenge last season’s setback in the “Clásico Tapatío” after having owned Atlas since 2018, but a late-game lapse allowed the Zorros to find the equalizer.
10. América (+3)
2-4-5, 10 points (13 goals for, 16 goals against)
The Aguilas reminded everyone that they were a preseason title favorite with a 3-0 stomping of Toluca. After spending a month in last place, América can once again aspire to a spot in the Liga MX playoffs.
11. Necaxa (+3)
4-2-5, 14 points (13 goals for, 15 goals against)
The Rayos took advantage of a tired Pumas team to extend its road unbeaten streak to five (3-2-0). Unfortunately they are the worst home team in Liga MX (1-0-4, while being outscored 2-9).
