The win sees Barcelona go in front of Sevilla for second place in LaLiga

Barcelona knew they were in for a tough match at home against Sevilla. If the Catalans won, they would leapfrog Sevilla for second place.

Julen Lopetegui’s side kept Barcelona at bay in the first half with Bono making some good saves as well as poor finishing.

The second half was more of the same with Barcelona unable to make that last pass or get a clean shot off. With less than 20 minutes to go, it seemed like Sevilla were going to be able to walk away with a draw.

Then, Pedri happened.

The 19-year-old midfielder received the ball outside the box. He appeared to take aim, sidestepped one Sevilla defender, then another until he finally got a shot off and beat the outstretched hand of Bono.

The Camp Nou, and Xavi Hernandez, went crazy at yet another piece of wondrous skill from the young midfielder.

Despite some scares towards the end of the game, Barça’s defense was able to shut down the Sevilla attack and kept another clean sheet.

Unsurprisingly, Pedri was named the Man of the Match. He was asked about his goal in the on-field post match press conference.

“The goal? It’s similar to the one I scored in Turkey,” Pedri said. “When I saw a leg, I pretended and then, when I released the ball, I knew it would go in. I’m very happy and I feel very loved. For me, Barça’s fans are the best in the world.”

In recent history, Barcelona struggled after the international break. The lack of finishing was apparent but Pedri stepped up when the team needed a goal. As mentioned, the club now sits alone in second place.

At the same time, they realize mounting a challenge for the league is all but unrealistic. Barcelona sit 12 points behind Real Madrid. They do have a game in hand and could narrow the deficit to nine. Again, it’s going to be difficult but they are going to allow themselves to dream.
