Manchester United to make new bid for Frenkie de Jong
Erik Ten Hag has seemingly prioritized the signing of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The former Ajax manager envisions his former player as the head of his new project at Manchester United.
The Red Devils had their opening bid of €60 million plus add-ons rejected by the Catalan side. Barcelona value De Jong close to €100 million but would be willing to accept a fixed fee of at least €85 million.
Man United are not throwing in the towel as they prepare a second offer for the Dutchman. According to 90min, United are set to offer around €70 million with add-ons that could take the fee to €80 million.
Given the amount Barcelona want, it would not come as a surprise if the Catalans reject the second proposal.
The saga surrounding De Jong has taken a few twists over the recent weeks. Initially, he was hesitant to join Manchester United as he wants to play Champions League football. United finished sixth in the Premier League, meaning they will play in the Europa League.
However, he’s been convinced of a possible move as he would be earning close to what he’s earning at Barcelona at Manchester United.
While manager Xavi Hernandez would like to keep him, Barcelona’s financial issues mean they need to sell players in order to cut the wage bill. De Jong’s wages would be a problem come next season and hamper their ability to improve the squad during the summer transfer window.
Manchester United appear confident they will be able to sign De Jong with money not being an issue. With regards to De Jong, United CEO Richard Arnold said, “Money is not a consideration in who we want.”
