Despite reports to the contrary, Barcelona must be getting pessimistic in their pursuit of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Catalan side have already had two bids rejected and have reportedly had a third offer waved off by the German giants.

According to Sport, Bayern turned down Barcelona’s bid of a €40 million fixed fee with €5 million in add-ons. Bayern remain steadfast in wanting at least €50 million for the Polish striker.

With one year remaining on his current deal, Bayern are not facilitating Lewandowski’s exit despite the striker directly expressing his desire to leave.

Following the latest rejection, Barcelona now need to determine how far they are willing to go in negotiations for the 33-year-old. They are still in a precarious financial situation and cannot afford to make the same mistakes as the previous board.

Bayern appear confident Lewandowski will remain a Bayern player come next season. Honorary president Uli Hoeness certainly seems to think so.

“I don’t know anything about a new offer. But as things stand in Munich, what I have heard is that Barcelona should save themselves the effort of making another offer,” Hoeness said at a sports congress in Neuland.”

For his part, Lewandowski considers his chapter in Germany over and only wants a move to Barcelona. He’s repeatedly reiterated his desire to leave and maintains hope an agreement can be reached that would be beneficial for both sides.

Given Bayern’s reluctance to let him leave, Lewandowski may be considering other courses of action.

Going on strike is something Barcelona does not want to have happen as they’d like to keep the relationship between them and Bayern amicable.

There is still some time before the start of pre-season but Barcelona need to move quickly to get a deal done. While Lewandowski is willing to wait, everyone has a limit. Other clubs are also attentive to the situation and could swoop in should the Catalans end up stepping aside.
