Bayern Munich claim 10th DFL Supercup with 5-3 win over RB Leipzig

One week before the 2022/23 campaign kicks off, 10-time defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich defeated RB Leipzig in the DFL Supercup at Red Bull Arena.

RB Leipzig – in search of their second-ever trophy after winning the German Cup last season – hosted a new-look Bayern Munich but came up short.

Bayern Munich went through major changes over the summer but they were the same old Die Roten when it comes to producing results. It only took 14 minutes for them to find the back of the net as Jamal Musiala rocketed a shot to give the German giants the lead.

Sadio Mane, Robert Lewandowski’s replacement, didn’t take very long to register his first goal with his new club. In the 31st minute, Mane had an easy time with no RB Leipzig defenders near him to tap home his first from a beautiful Serge Gnabry feed.

The feast on RB Leipzig continued as Pavard found the back of the net with his first shot on goal in the 45th minute and Bayern were in full control going into the second frame.

RB Leipzig got back in the game in minute 59, ruining the clean sheet opportunity for Manuel Neuer. Christopher Nkunku took the corner kick and through traffic, in the box, Marcel Halstenberg headed in a goal for the home side.

It didn’t last long as Bayern Munich restored their three-goal lead via a beautiful counter attack that led to a Thomas Muller shot rebounding to Gnabry who made no mistake.

A clumsy challenge by Pavard in the final quarter-hour led to a RB Leipzig penalty that Nkunku fired into the net to cut the deficit back to two goals.

The game turned into a chaotic match at the end with Dani Olmo cutting inside to get the host to within a goal of sending the game to a penalty shoot-out.

Bayern Munich held on in a lengthy and frantic stoppage time that saw Leipzig almost tie the match in a blink of an eye. Leroy Sane wrapped up the match scoring in the eighth minute of stoppage time. The 5-3 win for Bayern earned the club its 10th DFL Supercup, the most by any Bundesliga side.
