Five talking points from Barcelona’s win over Real Sociedad
The benefits of having Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski celebrated his 34th birthday by scoring a brace in the win over Real Sociedad. He scored the opener and the third goal which gave Barcelona some breathing room. He also provided the assist for Fati’s goal.
But the Polish striker was heavily involved throughout the match, dropping deep to pick up the ball as well as providing an outlet for Ter Stegen when playing out from the back.
He showed that despite his age, he still has plenty left in the tank. While neither goal was flashy, for lack of a better word, they were goals that he wasn’t going to miss. Having a near certainty in front of goal is something Barcelona have lacked. It’s why signing Lewandowski made sense even if they had to overpay somewhat to pry him away from Bayern Munich.
“Even though he’s 34, he looks like he’s 20,” Pedri said. “It’s crazy how many goals he scores and, above all, how he works for the team, he helps us a lot.”
It was certainly evident as he was pressing and dropping deep to help out even in the final minutes of the game.
Scoring a brace is a perfect birthday gift. It’s something Barcelona will hope to see the remainder of the season.
