AC Milan beat Juventus 2-0 at the San Siro Stadium in Milan on Saturday.

Fikayo Tomori scored the first goal for Milan in first-half stoppage time and Brahim Diaz increased the lead in the 54th minute.

Milan are now in third position in the league table with 20 points from nine matches, while Juventus are eighth with 13 from nine.

The win will definitely boost the Rossoneri’s morale ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday.

We now take a look at three things that stood out in the match

Milan had more attempts, Juve more possession in first half

Milan were the more direct of the two teams from the very beginning. While Juve dominated ball-possession, Milan had more attempts at goal.

The Rossoneri started the match with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Pierre Kalulu playing as the right-back, which meant they had three central defenders in their back four. It lent solidity to their defense, as Juve struggled to break through.

Rafael Leao continued to torment Juve’s defense with his fast runs and was denied by the woodwork on a couple of occasions.

Leao’s shot from a corner hit a post to deny the home side an opportunity to go ahead and then the Portuguese winger again saw his shot hit the post after brushing Wojciech Szczesny’s hand.

However, Milan were not be denied for long as Theo Hernandez took a shot from a corner that ricocheted off a Juventus player and went to Tomori, who made no mistake in slotting the ball home.

Milan scored again through a counter-attack

The home side managed to extend their lead through a counter-attack a few minutes into the second half.

Dusan Vlahovic played a pass near the half-line that was intercepted by Diaz, who then made a solo run while dodging past a few Juve players before shooting the ball into the net past Szczesny. It was his second goal of the season.

Juve, meanwhile, continued to struggle to string a few passes together in the opposition half as the Milan players often came up with vital interceptions. Moreover, Milan’s intense pressing often troubled the Juve players a great deal.

Stefano Pioli then introduced Charles De Ketelaere in place of Olivier Giroud. De Ketelaere impressed with his intelligent movement and passing, and often swapped places with Ante Rebic, who started playing as the centre-forward.

Juventus subs had some impact on the match

Massimiliano Allegri then decided to introduce Moise Kean and Matias Soule on the left and right flank, respectively, and their introduction had an impact on the match.

Kean’s pace and agility started troubling the Milan defense, but Kalulu and Tomori held firm. Kean helped Juve, who did not get any corner during the first 70 minutes of the match, earn a few corners, but Milan were able to defend them successfully.

Milan then replaced Leao with Divock Origi, a move that shifted Rebic to the left flank. Origi could have actually scored from a counter-attack as he ran into the Juve penalty box and then took a shot that Szczesny managed to parry.
