The United States men’s national team’s vacant hot seat continues to get linked with a host of high-profile coaches amid uncertainty over Gregg Berhalter’s future.

Berhalter was at the helm of the USMNT during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar – their first appearance in the competition in more than eight years.

Under the leadership of the 49-year-old, who himself appeared in two World Cups as a player, the side qualified for the knockout stages for only the sixth time in their history but couldn’t progress further as the Netherlands’ hurdle proved too much for Christian Pulisic and company.

However, their relentless pressing and directness in attack throughout the tournament gave the fans a lot of encouragement for the next World Cup which is set to be hosted in North America. But all that progress has seemingly hit the brick wall for the moment, with U.S. Soccer’s announcement regarding an investigation of Berhalter over an incident in 1991.

Berhalter’s contract with the side expired on Dec. 31 and there’s no guarantee he’ll return to the touchline. The situation has naturally led to suggestions for a new head coach.

Recently sacked Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch is viewed as a good fit for the position by many, while Jose Mourinho’s name has also been linked, which might be a bit far-fetched.

Now, the latest name to be thrown into the ring is that of Thierry Henry.

The Frenchman, who spent four years in MLS, suggested he’d like to return to management when asked if he’d want the job. He was Roberto Martinez’s number two at Belgium during the World Cup.

It remains to be seen how this develops. But the appointment of the Arsenal legend might help the federation convince New York-born Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun to represent them on the international stage instead of England. The 21-year-old, currently on loan at Reims, is leading the goal-scoring chart in Ligue 1.

The Stars and Stripes have done that with Yunus Musah before and Henry’s presence is only going to strengthen their case for yet another Arsenal academy talent.
