Sergiño Dest set to join PSV on loan
Sergiño Dest’s future at Barcelona seemed uncertain at best heading into the season and now the right-back is set for a return home so to speak.
Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven are reportedly nearing a deal that will see Dest return to the Netherlands and join PSV on a season-long loan.
Dest joined Barcelona after impressing with PSV’s rival, Ajax.
According to journalist Toni Juanmartí, the Dutch side will cover 50 percent of his wages and will have an option to buy.
Xavi Hernandez made it quite clear that Dest needed to look for a way out as he was not part of the manager’s plans — which is saying something considering Barcelona don’t have a natural right-back in the squad at the moment.
Arriving with much excitement three seasons ago from Ajax, Dest struggled to find his form with the Catalan side. Despite starting under Ronald Koeman, he always looked somewhat apprehensive going forward and a liability defensively speaking.
When Xavi took over, he played less and less until Xavi decided to stop using him altogether.
He went on loan to AC Milan last season where he played sparingly and was left off their squad list for the Champions League. His disastrous loan spell all but ruled out Milan making the move permanent.
Up until a few days ago, there seemed to be little to no interest in the American with rumors coming out that Barcelona were considering terminating his contract.
The demand to acquire Dest grew suddenly with not only PSV Eindhoven interested but Nice as well.
Dest ultimately preferred the PSV option and has already traveled to the Netherlands to undergo a medical. If everything goes well, he could make his debut with his new team on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League playoff against Rangers.
