Manchester City knew they were in for a challenge away to West Ham and that’s exactly what they got.
The Hammers went ahead in the 36th minute courtesy of a header from James Ward-Prowse. It had been a pretty even game until then with Manchester City having the better chances.
New signing Jeremy Doku equalized a minute into the second half. The Belgian winger cut inside from the left and deftly finished past Alphonse Areola who came up big in the first half to deny City on multiple occasions.
Both sides had their opportunities to go ahead but the goalkeepers pulled off quality saves, including Ederson blocking a one-on-one chance.
Manchester City finally pulled ahead in the 76th minute after a bit of uncertainty inside the box created by a floated pass that was eventually headed in by Bernardo Silva. It wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing goal nor the clearest opportunity for City in the half but a goal is a goal.
That goal seemed to take the sails out of West Ham and the home crowd.
Erling Haaland, who missed some ‘easy’ chances, put the game to rest in the 86th minute. With all the chances he had, he was eventually going to put one away.
The 3-1 scoreline could be somewhat flattering for Manchester City but they pick up the three points stay atop the Premier League standings.
Bernardo Silva proved the difference maker for City. Despite some of their departures, having someone like Silva on the bench ready to come in the second half is a privilege not many clubs or managers have.
City were also helped out a bit in that Edson Alvarez was forced to come off through injury. He’s quickly inserted himself and become an important part of David Moyes’ side.
Man City now turn their attention to Europe where they begin their Champions League title defense on Tuesday against FK Crvena zvezda.
