Arsenal are unbeaten in six North London derbies, seeking a fourth successive victory over Tottenham Hotspur for the first time since 1989. Spurs have won only two of 40 away league games against their fiercest rivals in 40 years, these coming in '93 and 2010.

Arsenal vs Tottenham preview

The North London derby is always a red-letter day in any Premier League season, a fixtures that always delivers, but even more than usual is at stake when these two fierce rivals meet on Sunday.

After 11 rounds of Premier League matches, Arsenal are top, but are under pressure after seeing their winning streak come to an end. A fortnight ago, the Gunners were held to a 2-2 draw by high-flying Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. After falling behind early, strikes from Bukayo Saka and then Leandro Trossard saw the visitors lead on Wearside, only to concede a stoppage time equaliser.

Prior to this, Mikel Arteta's team had collected eight consecutive clean sheets, equalling a club record thad had stood for 122 years, while enjoying ten successive victories across all competitions. In the Premier League, Arsenal have accumulated 20 points from the last 24 available, but only begin the weekend four points clear of Manchester City. This is also the start of a crucial week for the Gunners, hosting Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, before traveling to Chelsea next Sunday. So, will they commence this crucial eight day period with a North London derby victory?

Tottenham Hotspur meantime are only eight points worse off in fifth, but supporters are not in love with what they're witnessing. Last time out, Spurs seemed set to snatch victory over Manchester United, with late goals from Mathys Tel and then Richarlison turning the game around, the latter sparking wild scenes of celebration in stoppage time. Nevertheless, right at the death, the ten men of Man United bundled home an equaliser from a corner, stunning the stadium into silence.

This continues Tottenham's miserable home form, winless in five Premier League outings in N17, dating back to a victory over Burnley on the opening day. To give Spurs supporters encouragement ahead of this one, Thomas Frank's team are top of the away table, collecting 13 points out of a possible 15 on the road, enjoying victories over Manchester City, West Ham, Leeds and Everton. This though is their most important away game of them all, one the Lilywhites have not won since 2010, so can they change that fact on Sunday, derailing their rival's title hopes in the process?

Arsenal team news

Arsenal supporters were comforted with the news they feared during the international break; star centre-back Gabriel suffered an injury during Brazil's friendly against Senegal that means he will be sidelined for at least a month. In better news, Riccardo Calafiori is expected to be fit, despite withdrawing for Italy's squad early due to a knock.

In terms of who replaces Gabriel, Mikel Arteta has to choose between Piero Hincapié and Cristhian Mosquera, both good options, but the former's expirence, as well as the fact he is left-footed, could see him get the nod.

In attack however, Arteta has less options at his disposal. Martin Ødegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyökeres and Gabriel Jesus are all sidelined, and it is unclear who, if any, of that sextet could be involved here. So, for a third game in succession, it'll once again be Mikel Merino thurst into the role of emergency strike, flanked by Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Tottenham Hotspur: (4-3-3): Raya, Timber, Saliba, Hincapié, Calafiori; Zubimendi, Rice, Eze; Saka, Trossard, Merino.

Arsenal player to watch vs Tottenham

Eberechi Eze came extremely close to joining Tottenham in August, only for a last minute U-turn to see him sign for boyhood club Arsenal instead, the highlight of most Gooners' collective summers. He scored twice at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Crystal Palace in May, and one in his North London derby debut might take the roof off.

Tottenham team news

Thomas Frank meantime is without Radu Drăgușin, Kōta Takai, Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison, Dejan Kuluševski, Mohammed Kudus, Dominic Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani all due to injury.

So, Richarlison is likely to lead the line, with Rodrigo Bentancur returning to form a solid midfield trio alongside João Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr.

Captain Cristian Romero will sit out next weekend's clash with Fulham suspended if booked and, given that he's been cautioned in two of his last four North London derby appearances, this is likely.

Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup vs Arsenal: (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, van de Ven, Romero, Spence; Palhinha, Bentancur, Matar Sarr; Johnson, Simons, Richarlsion.
