Barcelona vs PSG preview

The champions of Spain and France go head-to-head at Montjuïc on Wednesday night in, what many believe, should've been last season's Champions League Final, so who will lay down an early marker?

Barcelona did a domestic treble last season, clinching a 28th La Liga title while also beating Real Madrid in both the finals of the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. However, the success remains tinged with a sense regret considering Barça crashed out in the Champions League semi-finals, ousted 7-6 by Inter, with I Nerazzurri snatching victory in extra time at San Siro.

This time round, Hansi Flick's team have made a flying start to the new campaign. On Sunday evening, goals from Jules Koundé and then Robert Lewandowski saw them come from behind to beat Real Sociedad 2-1, a result that propelled them to the top of the La Liga table, having yielded 19 points out of a possible 21. Meantime, in the Champions League, the Blaugrana beat Newcastle 2-1 at St James' Park on matchday one, thanks to a spectacular second half brace from Marcus Rashford. So now, can Barcelona claim a huge victory at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Wednesday's blockbuster?

As for Paris Saint-Germain, they began the defence of their first-ever European crown in some style, demolishing Atalanta 4-0 at Parc des Princes. Marquinhos, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes and Gonçalo Ramos all putting la Dea to the sword. Luis Enrique's side picked up the UEFA Super Cup last month, fighting back from 2-0 down to beat Tottenham on penalties in Udine, this the first of six trophies les Rouge-et-Bleu could collect this season.

Domestically, les Parisiens continue to dominate, currently top of Ligue 1 following Saturday's 2-0 victory over Auxerre; defenders Illia Zabarnyi and Lucas Beraldo on target. However, PSG are not impenetrable, beaten 1-0 in Le Classique by fierce rivals Olympique Marseille last Monday night, their first league loss at Stade Vélodrome since 2011. Here though, will PSG pick up three points at Montjuïc, or can Barcelona claim a statement victory over the European champions?

Barcelona team news

The main team news for both is about who isn't available. Firstly, in goal, Hansi Flick is without Marc-André ter Stegen long-term and now new number one Joan García, who has suffered a knee injury, is also sidelined. So, as he did throughout last season, veteran Wojciech Szczęsny will deputise.

Out-field, Alejandro Balde, Gavi, Fermín López and Raphinha are all injured, so youngster Gerard Martín will continue at left-back, while 17 year old Pedro Fernández, known as Dro, and Roony Bardghji came into a rotated lineup against Real Sociedad at the weekend.

Here, having seen half an hour off the bench on Sunday, Lamine Yamal is set to start a club match for the first time since August, while Dani Olmo will come in to support Robert Lewandowski in attack.

Barcelona predicted lineup vs Paris Saint-Germain: (4-3-3): Szczęsny; Koundé, Araújo, Cubarsí, Martín; de Jong, Pedri, Dani Olmo; Lamine Yamal, Rashford, Lewandowski.

Barcelona player to watch vs PSG

In the absence of Raphinha, Marcus Rashford has started four of Barça's last five fixtures, bagging an assist during each of their last four La Liga games, while scoring a brace at Newcastle. One of his most famous goals for Manchester United came in Paris, so can he haunt PSG again?

Luis Enrique's squad is also depleted, returning to Catalonia without captain Marquinhos as well as star attackers Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé, the latter having won the Ballon d'Or last week.

As a result, summer signing Illia Zabarnyi is likely to partner William Pacho at the back, while it'll be the same front three that crushed Atalanta, featuring Senny Mayulu and Bradley Barcola.

Paris Saint-Germain predicted lineup vs Barcelona: (4-3-3): Chevalier; Hakimi, Zabarnyi, Pacho, Mendes; João Neves, Vitinha, Fábian; Barcola, Kvaratskhelia, Mayulu.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's sublime strike against Atalanta remains his only goal of the season so far, but took his tally to six in the Champions League, so can he add to both tallies at Montjuïc?
