In yet another clash between European clubs at the Club World Cup in the United States, Bayern Munich and Benfica fought it out for top spot in Group C. However, the 1-0 result in favor of the Portuguese over the Germans created yet another surprise in this tournament, leaving Bayern only in second place before the start of the knockout stage, as well as breaking a historic losing streak, as Benfica had never beaten Bayern in any competition.
Using an alternative line-up, Bayern Munich were surprised in the first few minutes by speeding up their transitions even though they were tactically set up with a low line.
