Aston Villa had been unbeaten in six meetings with Brentford, prior to last month's visit to West London, with the Bees thereby targeting back-to-back victories over the Villans for the first time ever.

Brentford vs Aston Villa preview

Just 24 days ago, these two clubs met at the same stadium in the Premier League, with Dango Ouattara the only scorer, securing the points for Brentford. Will this one go the same way?

Brentford continued their encouraging start to the season on Saturday night, holding Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at home. After taking the lead through Kevin Schade's stupendous strike, they had seemingly thrown it away, the Blues going in front with only five minutes to play. Nevertheless, deep into stoppage time, substitute Fábio Carvalho proved to be the unlikely hero, popping up at the back post to poke home a dramatic equaliser, sparking jubilant scenes of celebration.

This means Keith Andrews' side have four points from four Premier League games, having also beaten Villa last month, as already mentioned. In the EFL Cup, the Bees dumped out Bournemouth in the previous round, thanks to goals from Igor Thiago and then Carvalho at Dean Court. However, Brentford have an underwhelming recent EFL Cup record, crashing out in round three in two of the last three seasons. Here though, are they favourites to progress to the fourth round?

Aston Villa meantime are still yet to score a goal this season, so can they change that fact at the fifth attempt? On Saturday, Unai Emery's team were held to a goalless draw by Everton on Merseyside, mustering just a solitary shot on target. In fairness, the hosts only managed two. This though doubles the Villans' points tally, having also played out a scoreless stalemate with Newcastle, before back-to-back defeats, beaten by Brentford of course, followed by a home hammering at the hands of Palace.

For the foreseeable future, the Claret and Blue Army's schedule will be busy, commencing their Europa League adventure when Bologna visit Birmingham in eight night's time. Villa though have a miserable recent EFL Cup record, winning just five of ten matches since being beaten finalists in 2020, only enjoying victories over Wycombe, Bolton and Barrow, Burton and Bristol City. So, can they beat top-flight opposition in the League Cup for the first time in over five and a half years?

Brentford team news

Keith Andrews switched to a back five for Chelsea's visit at the weekend, a Thomas Frank-esque move, but is expected to revert to a four this time.

Back-up goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson got the nod at Bournemouth in round two, so will he once again be donning the gloves, rotated in for Caoimhín Kelleher?

Weekend hero Fábio Carvalho will be hoping to start this time, as will club record signing Dango Ouattara and fit again full-backs Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey. Mikkel Damsgaard could return, having sat out the Saturday night draw due to illness. Lastly, there could be a debut for Reiss Nelson; his goal dumped the Bees out of the EFL Cup two years ago.

Brentford predicted lineup vs Aston Villa: (4-3-3): Valdimarsson; Hickey, Ajer, van den Berg, Henry; Henderson, Yarmolyuk, Ouattara, Fábio Carvalho, Schade; Thiago.

Brentford player to watch vs Aston Villa

Igor Thiago saw just 169 minutes of action last season due to injury, but has scored three goals so far this season, all away from home, so can he bagg his first at the Gtech?

Aston Villa team news

Unai Emery remains without Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana, hence why Lamare Bogarde started at the base of midfield at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Victor Lindelöf and Harvey Elliott both debuted off the bench against Everton, while fellow deadline day recruit Jadon Sancho was an unused substitute, but all three will be hoping to start this time.

Such is Aston Villa's lack of squad depth, they had two goalkeepers on the bench on Merseyside on Saturday, speaking of which, Marco Bizot, who has already started two Premier League games to date, is likely to be rotated in for Emi Martínez once again.

Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Brentford: (4-3-3): Bizot; Cash, Lindelöf, Torres, Maatsen; Bogarde, McGinn, Elliott; Malen, Sancho, Guessand.

Aston Villa player to watch vs Brentford

Harvey Elliott was the player of the tournament at this summer's under-21 Euros, seemingly ready to spark into life, so can he mark his full-Aston Villa debut with a goal in West London?

Brentford vs Aston Villa prediction

This Tuesday night EFL Cup tie should be entertaining, but we are backing Brentford to prevail, making home advantage count, with Villa's miserable form continuing: Brentford 2-1 Aston Villa.
