Celtic are winless in five meetings with Italian clubs, claiming just two victories from their last 21 such matches, beating the other Rome side Lazio home and away in this competition six years ago.

Roma meantime have won their last two against Scottish sides, ousting Dundee United 3-2 on aggregate in the European Cup semi-finals of 1984, before, slightly more recently, winning 2-0 at Rangers 35 days ago.

Celtic vs Roma preview

After an underwhelming start to his Celtic tenure, can Wilfried Nancy claim a statement victory? On Sunday, the newly-appointed French manager took charge of the Celts for the very first time, but oversaw a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Heart of Midlothian. This moves Hearts three points clear at the top, with the Hoops having won five on the spin in the Premiership under interim boss Martin O'Neill beforehand. Well, Nancy has certainly been thrown in at the deep end, with that top of the table clash and this European tie followed by the League Cup Final against St Mirren on Sunday.

Ahead of that trip to Hampden, it is vitally important that Celtic pick up some Europa League points here. A fortnight ago, the Hoops claimed a first European away win in four years, fighting back from a goal down to beat Feyenoord 3-1; Yang Hyun-jun, Reo Hatate and Benjamin Nygren all scoring at De Kuip. This takes the Bhoys' points tally to seven, moving up to 21st, but with games against Bologna and Utrecht still to come, every point is precious as they target a place in the knockout phase.

Roma meantime are 15th, only two points above their hosts, having been very inconsistent in the Europa League so far. The Giallorossi endured surprise back-to-back home defeats at the hands of Lille and Viktoria Plzeň, but have since enjoyed wins over both Rangers and Ibrox and then Midtjylland at the Olimpico; Neil El Aynaoui and Stephan El Shaarawy on target in the latter.

In Serie A, Roma supporters are dreaming of seeing their side win a first Scudetto since 2001, with Gian Piero Gasperini's side making an impressive start to the campaign, winning nine of their first 12 matches, thereby sat top. However, since then, the Giallorossi have suffered consecutive 1-0 defeats, beaten by champions Napoli in the Derby del Sole, before Sunday's 1-0 loss at Cagliari, conceding after Zeki Çelik had been sent off in Sardinia. So, perhaps now is a good time for Celtic to welcome Roma to Parkhead, but can Nancy get supporters back onside by guiding his team to a victory?

Celtic vs Roma head-to-head record

These two clubs have never previously met.

Celtic team news

Wilfried Nancy is coaching with one hand tied behind his back right now, given that Cameron Carter-Vickers, Alistair Johnston, Marcelo Saracchi, Jota and Callum Osmand are currently injured.

In better news, Kelechi Ịheanachọ was back on the bench on Sunday, having not featured since suffering a hamstring injury against Sturm Graz on 23 October.

Daizen Maeda

New manager Nancy immediately switched to his preferred back three at the weekend, so is likely to stick with that here, even if Yang Hyun-jun and Sebastian Tounekti are makeshift wing-backs, to say the least.

Celtic predicted lineup vs Roma: (3-4-2-1): Schmeichel; Trusty, Scales, Tierney; Yang, McGregor, Hatate, Tounekti; Nygren, Engels, Maeda.

Celtic player to watch vs Roma

Daizen Maeda scored 33 goals across all competitions last season, but only has six to his name this time round, but remains the Celts' most-likely match-winner here.

Roma team news

Manager Gian Piero Gasperini won the Europa League as Atalanta boss two seasons ago, so will take this competition seriously, albeit he travels to Glasgow without Angeliño, Wesley, Edoardo Bove and Artem Dovbyk due to injury.

Lorenzo Pellegrini

Attackers Stephan El Shaarawy, Leon Bailey, Evan Ferguson and Paulo Dybala were all on the bench at Cagliari on Sunday, but how many will return here. If Gasperini does make wholesale changes to his front three, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Matías Soulé, the two scorers at Ibrox, could drop out.

Roma predicted lineup vs Celtic: (3-4-3): Svillar; Mancini, Hermoso, Ndicka; Çelik, Koné, Cristante, Tsimikas; Bailey, Dybala, Ferguson.

Roma player to watch vs Celtic

Paulo Dybala is, unquestionably, Roma's most talented player. He has scored 44 goals for the club, ten of which have come in the Europa League, so will he prove too hot for the Celts' defence to handle?

Celtic vs Roma prediction

We're forecasting something of an upset in Glasgow's East End on Thursday, backing Celtic to defeat Roma at Parkhead, thereby claiming a massive victory for Wilfried Nancy: Celtic 2-1 Roma.
