This is a rematch of the 1970 European Cup Final at San Siro, a match Feyenoord won 2-1 thanks to Ove Kindvall's winner in extra time, after Tommy Gemmell had opened the scoring for the Hoops.
Amazingly, the pair have met only once since, this in the 2023 Champions League group stages, both encounters producing home wins.
Feyenoord have never lost any of their six home games against a Scottish club, winning five; Celtic have lost four of their last five clashes on Dutch soil, their most-recent victory a 3-1 win over Ajax in 2001; Bobby Petta, Didier Agathe and Chris Sutton the scorers at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
Feyenoord vs Celtic preview
It has been a truly miserable European campaign for Celtic thus far, but will their fortunes improve in Rotterdam? Back in August, the Hoops were catastrophically and ignominiously dumped out of the Champions League by Kairat on penalties, but haven't fared much better since dropping into this competition. So far, the Celts have picked up four points from four league phase matches, their sole victory coming against Sturm Graz. Last time out, now with Martin O'Neill in interim charge, they were hammered by Midtjylland in Herning, conceding three times in eight minutes before half time.

Considering Celtic's three remaining Europa League opponents are Roma, Bologna and Utrecht, there are no gimmes in there, so their performances are going to have to exponentially improve if they're to climb into the top 24. On Saturday night, the Hoops closed the gap on Premiership leaders Hearts to just four points, beating St Mirren 1-0, with Callum McGregor's rocket right at the death pinching the points at the end of a very uninspiring performance. Widespread reports suggest that Wilfried Nancy is poised to take over as the new manager, so this could be O'Neill's farewell, so can the man that led Celtic to the 2003 UEFA Cup Final mastermind a surprise away win?
Feyenoord meantime have not enjoyed their European campaign much either. Like their visitors, Robin van Persie's side were also ousted from Champions League qualifying in August, beaten by Fenerbahçe in İstanbul, and have won only once in the Europa League. They came from behind to beat Panathinaikos 3-1 on matchday three, but have lost their other three league phase fixtures without scoring, defeated by Braga, Aston Villa and most recently Stuttgart, conceding twice in the final six minutes at Neckarstadion.

In the Eredivisie too, after collecting 25 points from the first 27 available, it's all rather gone wrong recently. Feyenoord have lost three of their last four league games, most recently beaten by NEC Nijmegen on Sunday night, defeated 4-2, despite leading with just 20 minutes to play. This leaves them six points adrift leaders PSV, the team who kick-started this downward spiral. In short, this is a meeting of two crisis clubs at De Kuip, so who will claim a vital victory in Rotterdam?

Feyenoord team news
Under pressure Robin van Persie is without Gernot Trauner, Jordan Bos, Hwang In-beom, Jakub Moder and Canadian striker Cyle Larin due to injury, which is not helping his cause.

In terms of who will feature, Quinten Timber will be key at the base of midfield, while captain Sem Steijn and Anis Hadj Moussa their primary creative outlets.
Feyenoord predicted lineup vs Celtic: (4-3-3): Wellenreuther; Nieuwkoop, Ahmedhodžić, Watanabe, Smal; Timber, Valente, Steijn; Hadj Moussa, Ueda, Sauer.
Feyenoord player to watch vs Celtic
Japanese international Ayase Ueda has been on fire for Feyenoord this season, scoring 13 goals in 13 Eredivisie appearances, so can he now open his European account for the campaign?
Celtic team news
Martin O'Neill travels to Rotterdam without four of Celtic's best players due to injury.
Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Jota and Kelechi Ịheanachọ all remain sidelined, while Marcelo Saracchi and Callum Osmand are injured long-term too.

Compared to Saturday's lineup, Daizen Maeda is likely to be deployed centrally, with Johnny Kenny dropping out, meaning either Benjamin Nygren or Michel-Ange Balikwisha will be on the wing.
Liam Scales would sit out the clash with Roma in a fortnight if booked and, given the scarcity of defensive options, this is something they can ill-afford.
Celtic predicted lineup vs Feyenoord: (4-3-3): Schmeichel; Ralston, Trusty, Scales, Tierney; McGregor, Hatate, Engels; Nygren, Tounekti, Maeda.
Celtic player to watch vs Feyenoord
This will be Callum McGregor's 540th appearance for Celtic, lashing in his 77th goal for the club in Paisley on Saturday night, often the man for the big moment, so will the captain lead his team to a much-needed win in Rotterdam?
Feyenoord vs Celtic prediction
Fair to say, neither are at the peak of their powers, but we are backing Feyenoord to make home advantage count, forecasting a miserable visit to De Kuip for the Hoops.: Feyenoord 2-0 Celtic.
