Manchester City are unbeaten in eight meetings with Huddersfield, dating back to 1999, winning five of their last six encounters, including each of the last three, scoring 14 goals across this trio.

Huddersfield vs Manchester City preview

Manchester City have won 18 major trophies under Pep Guardiola, including four successive Carabao Cups between 2018 and 2021. However, after enduring a trophyless campaign last season, they are doubly determined to put that right this time round, so will this be the start of a run to Wembley?

Well, so far, the Sky Blues have made a mixed start to their Premier League campaign. On Sunday, they were thwarted a statement victory at Arsenal, taking an early lead through Erling Braut Håland before sitting in a low block with eleven men behind the ball thereafter. In the end, in injury time caused by their constant time-wasting, Man City were punished, with the Gunners equalising right at the end. This is far from a catastrophic result in isolation, but it means the Citizens have just seven points on the board from five games, already beaten by both Tottenham and Brighton.

As a result, Manchester City are down in ninth place, already eight points adrift league-leaders Liverpool, yet to build any semblance of momentum. Well now, ahead of the next international break, they face this cup tie, Burnley at home, a trip to Monaco in the Champions League and then Brentford away, which has to be four victories really, starting at the Kirklees Stadium on Wednesday night.

As for Huddersfield Town, they too were a Premier League side just seven seasons ago, but a lot has changed since then. The Terriers are currently enduring a second successive season in EFL League One, finishing tenth last year, but in decent shape to do better this time round. Rookie manager Lee Grant did win his first four home league games in charge, albeit his side have lost each of their last three away, before being held to a frustrating goalless draw by Burton Albion on Saturday.

This all leaves the Terriers fifth, three points adrift the automatic promotion spots. In the EFL Cup, Huddersfield have come through two penalties shootouts to get this far, causing two upsets in the process, ousting Championship Leicester and then Premier League Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last month. They have not reached the fourth round since 1999/00, so can they change that fact by pulling off a monumental upset when Man City visit West Yorkshire on Wednesday?

James Trafford started the first three Premier League games, but was instantly sidelined following Gianluigi Donnarumma's arrival, but he'll get a rare chance to showcase what he can do here.

Out-field, fit again John Stones and Nathan Aké could start, while Savinho and Oscar Bobb are among those expected to come into attack.

Manchester City predicted lineup vs Huddersfield Town: (4-3-3): Trafford; Lewis, Khusanov, Stones, Aké; Nico, Nunes, Mukasa; Savinho, Bobb, Foden.

Manchester City player to watch vs Huddersfield Town

There is likely to be a senior debut for 18 year old Divine Mukasa, having been an unused substitute against Napoli and Arsenal. He has scored 19 goals in 47 appearances for Man City's under-18s, featuring regularly for the u21s and in the UEFA Youth League, so will his big moment come here?

Huddersfield vs Manchester City prediction

Anything other than a routine Manchester City victory on Wednesday night would be a massive surprise, the Sky Blues set to cruise through to round four: Huddersfield Town 0-4 Manchester City.
