Sergio Reguilón’s signing says a lot about where Inter Miami are right now and what the club wants to become from this point on. It’s not just a direct replacement for Jordi Alba, one of the team’s recent icons, but a calculated move to keep the competitive level high in a sensitive position. At 29, available on the market and under contract through December 2027 with an option to extend until 2028, the Spanish left back arrives with a strong European résumé, aligned messaging, and a clear hunger for trophies.

Reguilón isn’t a prospect or a long term gamble. He’s a finished product, well seasoned, with more than 260 professional appearances and stints at Real Madrid, Sevilla, Atlético de Madrid, plus extensive experience in the Premier League with Tottenham, Manchester United, and Brentford. He knows what it means to play under pressure, to compete at a high level, and to handle daily demands. He’s coming off a quiet season in England, that’s true, with limited minutes, but that doesn’t erase his track record or reduce the weight of Inter Miami’s decision.

A strong replacement for a recent icon

Jordi Alba’s departure, following his retirement after lifting the 2025 MLS Cup, left a gap that couldn’t be filled just any way. Inter Miami could’ve gone for a younger name, a cheaper option with less impact. Instead, the club went to the market looking for someone with similar experience, still at a competitive age, and with a winning background.

Reguilón fits that profile. He won the Europa League with Sevilla, was also part of Tottenham’s Europa League winning squad in the 2024/25 season, lifted the FIFA Club World Cup with Real Madrid, and logged meaningful minutes in top level competitions like the Champions League and the Premier League.

European experience and ambition aligned with the project

Since Messi’s arrival, Inter Miami have been walking a fine line between spectacle and competitiveness. The club understands it draws attention, but it also learned quickly that attention alone doesn’t sustain a sporting project. Reguilón’s signing follows the same logic as other recent moves, experienced players, used to winning, who raise the level of the squad without turning it into a museum of former stars.

At 29, the Spaniard still has the intensity to handle the modern fullback role, pushing forward, tucking inside, holding the defensive line, and providing width when the game calls for it. He doesn’t arrive with Alba’s media weight, but he may bring fresher legs and a real desire to prove himself after an uneven spell in England.
