AC Milan are currently unbeaten in five meetings with Inter, winning three of them, despite the fact that the Nerazzurri had won six successive Derby della Madonninas immediately beforehand.

Inter Milan vs AC Milan preview

The derby della Madonnina is always one of the biggest occasions on the European football calendar but, with the Serie A title race extremely tight, this latest clash has added importance.

11 matches into this season, it is Internazionale Milano who lead the way, albeit level on points with Roma, while just three points seperate the top five. After a slow start to the campaign, losing two of their first three, Cristian Chivu's side come into this one following three straight victories, thereby winning seven of their last eight. Before the international break, Inter beat Lazio 2-0 at San Siro, with Lautaro Martínez breaking the deadlock early before Ange-Yoan Bonny secured victory.

The Nerazzurri have won two of the last five Serie A titles, clinching their historic 20th Scudetti by beating AC Milan on a landmark night back in April 2024. Last season though, they missed out on the title on the final day, before being demolished 5-0 by PSG in the Champions League Final, so are doubly determined to bring the Scudetto back to Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

In contrast, AC Milan have only been Serie A champions once since 2011, finishing all the way down in eighth last season, but firmly believe they are in this title race. Massimiliano Allegri's side are unbeaten since the opening weekend, claiming statement victories over both Napoli and Roma so far, with Strahinja Pavlović the only scorer in the latter earlier this month, rounding off an excellent counter attack, albeit Mike Maignan was the hero, saving a second half Paulo Dybala spot-kick.

However, draws are currently holding this team back, with four of the Rossoneri's last six fixtures ending all square, including their trip to Parma a fortnight ago. Goals from Alexis Saelemaekers and then Rafael Leão had them 2-0 up and cruising at the Tardini, only to throw it away an draw 2-2. All of this means Milan start the weekend just two points below their city rivals, targeting a victory that would see them leapfrog Inter. So, who will claim a win in Sunday night's crucial Milan derby?

Lautaro Martínez has started this season on fire, scoring eight goals already, also on target during Argentina's friendly win over Angola in Luanda last Friday. He has previously netted nine times against Milan, the top-scorer in Derby della Madonnina history is Andriy Shevchenko with 14, so can Martínez close in on that record?

AC Milan team news

Massimiliano Allegri, who will also deploy a 3-5-2, is without injured duo Adrien Rabiot and Santiago Gimenez, but does have options from which to choose.

After suffering a hamstring injury during the October window, Christian Pulisic did not go away with the US this week, seeing 20 minutes off the bench in Parma, so could he start this time?
