Atlanta United drew 2-2 with the Seattle Sounders at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in a match that looked all but lost until the final minute. Alexey Miranchuk’s stoppage-time goal salvaged a point that could carry far more emotional weight than what the standings alone suggest.
With the result, Atlanta stays in 13th place in the Eastern Conference with 13 points. Despite the late stumble, Seattle remains solid in the Western Conference, holding 4th place with 38 points.
Atlanta controls the first half
In the opening 45 minutes, Atlanta looked more aggressive and organized than in recent outings. With Almirón and Ronald Hernández driving plays down the right side, the team pressed high and created chances early on.
Atlanta opened the scoring after a buildup that started with Pedro Amador winning back possession. Hernández launched a long ball to Almirón, who held on despite being marked by two defenders. The Paraguayan found Emmanuel Latte Lath, who linked up with Luke Brennan. Brennan’s cross deflected off Yeimar Gómez and caught goalkeeper Andrew Thomas off guard. Own goal, 1–0 to the home side.
Atlanta stayed in control through halftime, tallying seven shots but none on target. Brennan hit the post in the 41st minute and had a goal ruled out for offside two minutes later.
Seattle answers, but Miranchuk steps up late
Seattle came out of the locker room looking sharper. In the 54th minute, Pedro de la Vega led a 3-on-1 counterattack and, with no clear passing option, chose to shoot. He picked out the corner past Brad Guzan to level the score.
The visitors nearly took the lead when a low cross from Alex Roldan deflected off the defense and hit the post. They did go ahead in the 95th minute. Nouhou delivered a ball from the left, and Osaze De Rosario rose in the middle of the box, beating his marker and heading it home with precision.
Just when it seemed like another home loss was certain, Almirón took a quick throw-in down the right side and found Alexey Miranchuk outside the box. The Russian midfielder didn’t hesitate, unleashing a powerful left-footed shot that soared into the top corner.
