Heavily favored to secure another victory in the current Serie A season after a fantastic derby against Inter last week, Juventus ended up failing to deliver the result their fans wanted, only managing a 1-1 draw with Atalanta, despite having the upper hand for much of the game.
Contrary to initial expectations, the first half in Turin was tight and with few opportunities, contrary to the expectation generated when Kalulu hit the crossbar in the first minute, almost opening the scoring for the home team. Later, Adzic was denied by goalkeeper Carnesecchi, and Thuram saw his shot deflected and graze the Atalanta goal. But in stoppage time at the end of the first half, Sulemana dribbled past the entire Bianconeri defense and slotted the ball into the corner to put the visitors ahead.
The start of the second half gave the impression that Juventus would not be able to avoid defeat at home, as Igor Tudor watched Atalanta control the score while time was running out alarmingly. However, the situation changed completely in the 78th minute when João Mario sent the ball into the box, Kossounou missed his attempted clearance, and Juan Cabal struck with his right foot, scoring his first goal of the season and tying the game.
There was still a chance to get a better result because two minutes later, Marten de Roon received his second yellow card and the Bergamo team was left with one player less. The game took a completely different turn, with the Turin team pushing forward in search of a comeback, which almost came in the 88th minute, with McKennie's deflection that made the crowd gasp before Carnesecchi's save, determining the final result of the match.
What's next for both teams in the season
Juventus is now preparing for its second Champions League match, taking the field on Wednesday, away from home, against Villarreal, with the classic against Milan as its next commitment in the Italian league. Atalanta will host Club Brugge on Tuesday, also in the Champions League, and on Saturday will face Como in Serie A.
