Kansas City Current shut out Angel City FC 1-0 to stay atop the 2025 NWSL standings. Bia Zaneratto scored the winner in the 69th minute, but the game also saw a highlight-reel save on a penalty kick by goalkeeper Lorena, who kept the win intact and sealed another win at CPKC Stadium. Current win their 11th game in 13, and their sixth in a row, to complete the first half of the season.

Good beginning and missed chances

From the first whistle at CPKC Stadium, Kansas City had the initiative, taking the ball and charging forward. The first genuine opportunity was created by Michelle Cooper just five minutes into the game. She traveled down the right flank and sent a low ball into the box to Izzy Rodriguez, who had space but saw her shot sail over the bar. The pressure kept building with some good work by Kayla Sharples and Temwa Chawinga, who hit just wide in the 31st minute.

The initial 45 minutes were goalless, yet the home team plainly dominated play. Angel City did not have a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Lorena steps forward at the right moment

Early in the second half, in the 54th minute, the referee awarded Angel City a penalty when Elizabeth Ball fouled Thompson within the box. The forward took it, putting it to the left corner, but Lorena read it well and stretched to make the save. The ball even touched the crossbar on its departure. It was the first penalty save for Lorena in the NWSL and the first for a Kansas City goalkeeper since 2023.

Bia comes into being and prevails

Kansas City responded six minutes afterwards. Rodriguez started the counterattack with a long ball, Chawinga beat the defense and sent a low shot that Anderson deflected. But the rebound came straight to Bia Zaneratto, who found herself in open space and slid it in with ease to take the lead. It was her fifth in the 2025 regular season, equal to her score last season. With it, she became the seventh player in the history of the franchise to register 10 career regular-season goals.

Historical performance on and off the stat sheet

The win tied the second-longest winning streak in team history for Kansas City Current. The six-game winning streak is part of an 11-win streak in 13 games. They are the only unbeaten team left and the only team with a perfect home record in 2025.
