Kylian Mbappé left out of France squad amid Real Madrid struggles
Life at Real Madrid has not gone how Kylian Mbappé nor the club imagined. Incorporating arguably the world's best player into a side that won LaLiga and the Champions League should have been a dream come true.
So far, it's been anything but.
Mbappé has six goals in 10 matches played for Real Madrid. But half of those has been penalties and in the important matches, he's failed when called upon. He missed two chances in El Clasico against Barcelona and was caught offsides eight times.
Against AC Milan, he also had a couple of opportunities to bring Real Madrid back in the game but his efforts were stopped by fellow countryman Mike Maignan. It hasn't taken long for those clamoring for him to come to the Spanish giants to turn on him.
To make matters worse, his club struggles has seemingly affected his status for France.
For the second straight international window, manager Didier Deschamps has opted to not include Mbappé in the France squad. The first time was chalked up to injury despite Mbappé featuring in the final match before the break.
This time, however, his poor form is to blame.
"I've had discussions with him, it is a decision that took for this block of matches only," Deschamps said. "Kylian wanted to come."
While it may only be for this upcoming international break, the fact that Mbappé wanted to go but Deschamps opted not to include him speaks on where the France star may be both on a physical and mental level.
His numbers aren't terrible but he's come up short in matches that mattered most. Mbappé has become the focus of the Spanish press as one of the reasons why Real Madrid aren't what they were last season. Specifically Mbappé's lack of commitment when it comes to tracking back. Then there is the apparent lack of chemistry with Vinicius Junior. With neither of them tracking back, it's left Real Madrid exposed defensively and have paid for it recently.
The extra week of rest could do Mbappé some good. But as he's finding out, patience at Real Madrid runs thin and if things continue going the way they have been, his quest for a Champions League trophy and a Ballon d'Or are going to have to wait at least another season.
