Arsenal are winless in 15 visits to Anfield, dating back to September 2012, albeit their last four clashes with Liverpool on Merseyside have all produced draws.

Liverpool vs Arsenal preview

Last season's top two have both made perfect starts to this new Premier League season, so something has got to give at Anfield on Sunday. Based on Liverpool's first three outings this season, including the FA Community Shield that finished 2-2, another entertaining affair awaits.

On Monday night, Arne Slot's side were involved in an all-time Premier League classic, although it didn't appear as if it was going to be this way for the majority of the game. 20 seconds into the second half, Liverpool led 2-0 at St James' Park, with Hugo Ekitiké bagging the second, after Ryan Gravenberch had opened the scoring, while the hosts were also down to ten men. However, against the odds, Newcastle roared back and equalised in the 88th minute, pushing for a winner thereafter. However, in the tenth minute of injury time, Tyneside was stunned into silence when 16 year old substitute Rio Ngumoha curled home a dramatic, last-gasp winner for the Reds.

Having also beaten Bournemouth 4-2 on the opening weekend, Slot's team have conceded twice in all three fixtures so far this season, matches that have produced 15 goals, that's an average of a goal every 18 minutes on average. So, will their attacking firepower see them defeat Arsenal on Sunday?

Well, in contrast to their hosts, Arsenal have won both matches so far without conceding. On the opening weekend, the Gunners battled to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Riccardo Calafiori's goal from a corner, poking home from mere picometres out, enough to secure victory. Then, last weekend, Mikel Arteta's team demolished Leeds 5-0 in North London; both Jurriën Timber and Viktor Gyökeres bagging braces, while Bukayo Saka also struck on the cusp of half time.

So, Arsenal will travel to Merseyside confident of claiming a result, with this just the continuation of their very tough start, given that their next three fixtures are Nottingham Forest (H), Manchester City (H) and then Newcastle (A). However, if the three in a row Premier League runners-up are going to take that final step, these are the litmus tests they need to be passing, so can they claim a serious statement victory at Anfield against the champions on Sunday afternoon?

Liverpool vs Arsenal head-to-head record

  • Matches Played: 244.

Liverpool team news

Arne Slot's main selection headache comes at right-back. Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined, while Conor Bradley was only fit enough to see ten minutes off the bench at St James' Park. If the Northern Irishman isn't good to go, as was the case on Tyneside, Dominik Szoboszlai will once again fill in.

In midfield, Alexis Mac Allister did not feature on Monday due to injury, but could return here.

Further forward, Slot boasts an embarrassment of riches. Florian Wirtz is yet to shine in a Liverpool shirt, but Hugo Ekitiké certainly has, scoring in all three game so far, so will he continue the streak?

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Arsenal: (4-3-3): Alisson; Szoboszlai, Konaté, van Dijk, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Wirtz; Salah, Ekitiké, Gakpo.

Liverpool player to watch vs Arsenal

Mohamed Salah has scored 11 career goals against Arsenal, of which seven have come at Anfield, so will the Egypian fire the champions to victory over the challengers here?

Arsenal team news

The major blemish on an otherwise perfect days against Leeds was the injury blows. Bukayo Saka will be sidelined for a few weeks after suffering a hamstring injury, while captain Martin Ødegaard is also a massive doubt due to a shoulder problem, having not trained this week. Elsewhere, Ben White isn't fit either, while Kai Havertz will spend the next few months on the sidelines following knee surgery.

Given all of that, Noni Madueke will deputise for Saka on the right-wing, while Eberechi Eze could be thrown in for his debut, having been given quite the reception when he was unveiled on the pitch last weekend. Lastly, Viktor Gyökeres is now off the mark in Arsenal colours, scoring a brace against Leeds, so can the Swedish international bag an even more important one here?

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Liverpool: (4-3-3): Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Zubimendi, Rice, Eze; Madueke, Martinelli, Gyökeres.

Arsenal player to watch vs Liverpool

If Mikel Arteta is pondering who to chose on the left-wing, perhaps he should consider Gabriel Martinelli's record in this fixture. The Brazilian winger has scored six times against Liverpool, the joint-most against any opponent in his career, four of which have come at Anfield.

Liverpool vs Arsenal prediction

As already referenced, this clash should guarantee goals, but we're firmly sitting on the fence and predicting a draw that'll give us no clues as to who are favourites for the title: Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal.
