Having Loris Karius sign with Schalke 04 really seems like a rather surprising twist of script on the already polar nature of events in this player's career. From the bright lights of the 2018 Champions League final that its errors set in stone and into the obscurity of no club, the German goalkeeper now has a chance to rewrite his story in Bundesliga 2. But how much of a sure thing is Schalke's bet and how much of just an attempt to fill gaps?

A meeting of needs

Karius' signing was made possible by the loan of Ron-Thorben Hoffmann to Eintracht Braunschweig. With the window open, Schalke needed an experienced replacement to fight with Justin Heekeren for the starting position. According to Youri Mulder, the club's sporting director, the signing was necessary to keep the quality in the team.

At 31, Karius brings a résumé mixed with high-level experiences and moments of instability. The time spent at Liverpool is still remembered-for that fateful final against Real Madrid-but also good moments spent with clubs like Mainz and Besiktas. In Schalke, he will find an enthusiastic fan base and a club eager to regain relevance in the German scene.

A bet on the rebirth of Karius

One can't refer to Loris Karius and not talk about those mistakes from that 2018 final. An episode which, yes, carved deep marks into his career and public image underlined by very serious psychological pressure of elite players. Ever since then, he has lived a seesaw existence with undistinguished stints at Besiktas, Union Berlin, and Newcastle.

Now, with Schalke, Karius has the opportunity to rewrite his story. More mature, he seems ready to prove that he still can be a trusted and relevant goalkeeper. That was evident in his comments: "Schalke is a great club with passionate supporters, something I have always felt when playing at Veltins Arena. I'm looking forward to getting started." Schalke 04 and the context of the situation are very particular.

The current season has been a rescue mission for Schalke in Bundesliga 2. A once force in the German elite, the club is now in reconstruction, finding it hard to struggle back to where it belonged. Karius' arrival adds a bit of experience to a squad that badly needs a balance between youth and maturity.

Healthy and fruitful competition between Justin Heekeren and Karius in addition can give Schalke a very decent choice in goals, but the pressure to perform well will be intense, and even slight negligence could be magnified in such context by the club that was rebuilding itself.

 The goalkeeper for Schalke's recovery

If there is one position where confidence and stability are the two keywords, it is certainly the goalkeeper's. For Karius, though, the challenge will not be only technical; for him, the task will also be in the head: to overcome old ghosts and take responsibility on the field, but also in the dressing room. Schalke, in return, will have to create that atmosphere necessary for the keeper to regain confidence.
