In search of a shock signing for the remainder of the MLS season with a view to the playoffs, Los Angeles FC are very close to signing Son Heung-min, Spurs' star player in recent years. LAFC's interest in Son had already been rumored at various times, but reports in the last few hours indicate that the US team is making an effort to bring the South Korean to the MLS in the coming weeks.

LA FC would be willing to offer Son a prominent place by integrating him as a designated player with an opening for a contract then or after the 2026 World Cup. On the other hand, the Spurs seem willing to try to keep Son for another season, at least until August/September, mainly because of the commercial value associated with his presence in the team, especially in Asia and North America itself, as we can see during the pre-season.

While Los Angeles FC want a global star with commercial and footballing impact, Tottenham's mission is to give Son a dignified farewell, including participation in the tournament in Seoul and a possible final season in the UEFA Champions League, as well as protecting the club's finances by letting him leave free of charge at the end of his contract.

Son still has another year left on his contract with Spurs (until June 2026), with a unilateral option exercised by the club to extend it by another 12 months. This gives Tottenham the power to decide when to leave, should an offer be made. The 33-year-old Korean is entering a different phase of his career and this could be the MLS's trump card, offering a comfortable lifestyle in Los Angeles alongside a large Korean community, as well as ease of international flights.

This move would also allow Son to be guaranteed a place in the World Cup by playing competitive matches before the global tournament. Even so, the chance of him leaving before the Asian tour (at the beginning of August) is considered low, and it is more likely that he will only be signed in January 2026.
