Luis Suárez hits trouble again just when Inter Miami needed him most

Luis Suárez has been suspended again at Inter Miami, and the mood behind the scenes in MLS has turned tense. The Uruguayan forward received a one-game ban for violent conduct after kicking Nashville’s Andy Nájar during the first round of the playoffs. The league’s Disciplinary Committee ruled that the act was aggressive, even though the play had already been reviewed by VAR and ignored by the referee. The punishment takes Suárez out of the decisive match against Nashville, scheduled for Saturday.

Inter Miami accepted the suspension in an official statement but didn’t hide its concern about the precedent it sets. The club emphasized that it expects the same standard to be applied in similar situations going forward, since the play had already been analyzed on the field and no foul was called. The reaction, while polite, made it clear that the team was uneasy with the league’s post-game intervention. There’s a sense that the decision was meant to “set an example” and reinforce disciplinary control, something MLS has been trying to highlight since the arrival of stars like Lionel Messi and Suárez himself.

The weight of Suárez’s history

The Committee’s decision didn’t come out of nowhere. Suárez carries a reputation that, fair or not, follows him every time controversy arises. Back in September, he was suspended for six games for spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member. Now, with this new episode, he’s back in the headlines more for his temper than for his goals. That inevitably shapes public perception and, perhaps, disciplinary judgments too. The Uruguayan star still plays with the same fire as always, but MLS’s tolerance for this kind of behavior seems lower than what he encountered in earlier stages of his career.

The fact is, Inter Miami relies heavily on Suárez. Even at 38, he remains a decisive player, especially when paired with Messi. That’s why his absence in this knockout round hits hard for the Miami side, which needs a win over Nashville to stay alive. Inside the locker room, the suspension is viewed as just another obstacle at a time when the group is still searching for consistency after an uneven season.

A message to the rest of the league

MLS has been working to build an image of professionalism and credibility amid a wave of international stars joining its ranks in recent years. In that context, Suárez’s case also serves as a showcase. By punishing a big name even without an in-game sanction, the league sends a message that no one is above the rules. The real challenge, though, is balance.

Inter Miami, while expressing respect for the decision, left an important point between the lines: it expects that the same standard will apply to every player from every club in similar cases. It’s a fair demand, especially since MLS is still trying to find consistency in how it handles disciplinary matters.
