Manchester City had every chance of booking their place in the next UEFA Champions League this weekend, as they faced the worst team in the Premier League for the 2024/25 season. Despite all the favoritism, the Citzens were unable to score a single goal against Southampton and were limited to a bitter away draw.

As expected from the start, Pep Guardiola's team hardly left the pitch in the first 45 minutes, pressing in search of the first goal. There were eight shots and 75% possession before the break, but Ramsdale had to work very little with only one shot on target, showing a huge lack of efficiency from City's decisive players.

At the break, Southampton showed greater tactical organization and prevented Manchester City from having more freedom in the opening minutes, but Ramsdale had to work as the minutes drew to a close. In the most dangerous move, Doku caused a defensive imbalance on the left and Bernardo Silva controlled the ball to finish with great class, but Bednarek prevented the goal from being scored on the line.

The Citzens tried to attack more after this dangerous move, looking to exploit the open spaces, but Erling Haaland got very little action in one of the lowest XG games (0.05) of the season. Just before the final whistle, RĂºben Dias tested Ramsdale with a header, and the Southmapton goalkeeper worked well. Finally, Marmoush tried a shot from outside the box in the dying minutes, but the ball hit the crossbar and the draw was secured.

The Southampton fans' huge celebration at the final whistle contrasted greatly with the Manhcester City fans' huge frustration after the game. After five consecutive victories against better qualified opponents, the Citzens now need to concentrate more during the week ahead of a crucial FA Cup clash, which is their only remaining chance of the title. At the same time, City must hope for a draw between Chelsea and Newcastle to avoid losing 4th place.
