After a vexatious exit from the EFL Cup during the week and the very early loss of one of their very few real title chances this season (with only the FA Cup remaining to keep any hope of a trophy alive), Manchester United finally got their first win of the current Premier League season when they beat Burnley 3-2. However, the fans have very little reason to celebrate this weekend.
The first piece of negative news was the injury to Matheus Cunha, who has already been cut from the Brazilian national team squad and will have to sit out at least a few weeks after feeling pain in his thigh. But the worst news was the lack of control during the match against one of the Big Six's weakest opponents in the PL.
The Red Devils opted for high marking and a lot of attacking pressure, with Mason Mount the main man responsible for distributing play in search of Matheus Cunha, Mbuemo and Diallo during the first half, opting for several long balls behind Burnley's defense, especially on the left side. The score almost opened up in the 16th minute after a penalty was awarded by the VAR, which canceled out Kyle Walker's foul on the British midfielder.
However, the pressure finally resulted in a goal in the 27th minute, when Bruno Fernandes took a free-kick and the ball hit Josh Cullen's back before going into the net. After Matheus Cunha's injury, Man Utd were lost on the pitch and Burnley made more trouble for Ruben Amorim's side.
Manchester United suffered a lot against a modest team
In contrast to the pressure seen during the first half, Manchester United were very listless after the break and lost all their dynamism after Ruben Amorim's misreading of the game, with Mount coming on and Mainoo coming on at half-time. Burnley realized this and went in search of an equalizer when Lyle Foster took advantage of a poor clearance from a corner on the right to shoot.
However, Manchester United went in search of their second goal with an immediate response from Dalot, who was brought on on the left flank to cross low and Mbuemo could only push the ball into the net. Despite the good response, Burnely took advantage of another moment of inattention and equalized again when Jaidon Anthony took advantage of a free-kick. With plenty of attackers towards the end, the Red Devils needed a penalty in the 96th minute for Bruno Fernandes to score the winner.
