News that Lisandro Martínez had suffered an ACL injury in his left knee sent shockwaves at Manchester United and the Argentine national team. The absence of one of the toughest defenders, at such a crucial juncture of the season, has raised several questions about United's future and what this means for Argentina's backline.

The weight of serious injury

Manchester United confirmed the injury to the Argentine defender this past Sunday, after the match against Crystal Palace. The club didn't comment on the severity of the rupture but mentioned that Martínez has already begun his recovery process and will be fully supported through it.

The problem? ACL injuries are no joke-recovery time ranges from six to nine months, depending on the severity and how the body reacts to treatment. He's officially out for the 2024/25 season, in other words.

Another blow in the middle of chaos

United was a mess before it all went up in flames. With a discordant squad, fragile defense, and turmoil internally, this is a team fighting its way through a tumultuous season. And lying 13th in the Premier League table, they're miles off that Champions League place, and really, there seems no route back.

To add to the crisis, Erik ten Hag was sacked, and the arrival of Rúben Amorim hasn't stabilized the team yet. United's defense was already fragile, and now they lost one of the true leaders on the pitch.

Without Lisandro, the backline of the Red Devils becomes even weaker, and the Portuguese coach will have to find solutions fast to avoid an even bigger collapse.

Their next challenge? A must-win FA Cup clash against Leicester City on Friday. With the team desperate for a turnaround, this game will be the first real test to see how they cope without Martínez.

ACL injuries: brutal sentence for any player

Probably the worst injury in soccer would be tearing the anterior cruciate ligament. Besides all the muscle pulls or small fractures, the ACL is responsible for knee stability, and recovery can be very slow and painful. Players who suffer this kind of injury usually need a minimum of six months just to start training again, and even then it can take a very long time before they regain full confidence in their movements.

We have seen it earlier-some come back as strong as ever, while others never quite reach that level again. Everything will be about how his body responds to the injury and how artfully he approaches the rehabilitation process in general.

A test of patience and resilience

For Manchester United, this could not have been worse timing. For Lisandro Martínez, it was a test of patience, resilience, and metal toughness.

No player would ever want to be out for so long, particularly when he's at the pinnacle of his career. Sometimes, reality is just brutal, and now he needs to face his biggest battle on his journey thus far-getting back even stronger after this injury.

It could be that, with suitable treatment, rigid club support, and a solid focus on rehabilitation, there is every chance Martínez could be back before the season is out. But the fact is, rushing it could prove an expensive mistake.

Now, it's up to Manchester United to work out how to solve a problem to which there are no easy answers.
