Mexico have won just three of their last ten encounters with Ecuador, losing three. Their last two encounters have ended goalless, including a draw in Arizona at the most recent Copa América that saw Ecuador progress and Mexico eliminated by virtue of goal difference.

Mexico vs Ecuador preview

After a pretty embarrassing friendly defeat on Saturday night, can Mexico bounce back in Zapopan? At the weekend, el Tri were demolished 4-0 by Colombia at AT&T Stadium, comprehensively swatted aside, despite actually mustering more shots than los Cafeteros. Before this, Javier Aguirre's team had been unbeaten in nine, retaining the CONCACAF Gold Cup trophy in July, before solid if unspectacular draws with both Japan and Korea Republic in friendlies last month.

Since Aguirre was re-appointed last year, following their catastrophic showing at Copa América, Mexico had shown clear signs of improvement, but Saturday's demolition re-opens concerns that el Tri will embarrass themselves as World Cup co-hosts next summer. Here, Mexico will play a friendly on Mexican soil for only the third time since September 2020, most recently beating USA 2-0, also at Estadio Chivas, a year ago. Usually, the FMF insists on playing as many matches as possible stateside, in an attempt to price gouge supporters, but will the home crowd have a victory to enjoy?

As for Ecuador, they will be no push-overs, underlined by the fact they finished second in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table, conceding just five goals across 18 fixtures, equalling the South American record held by Brazil. This did feature six 0-0s, including a sequence of four successive goalles stalemates earlier this year, so don't expect la Tri to be entertaining.

Sebastián Beccacece's team were in action on Friday night, holding the United States to a 1-1 draw in Austin, taking the lead through talisman Enner Valencia, before conceding late on. Ecuador will also face Canada and New Zealand next month, currently unbeaten in 12 internationals, dating back to September last year, and that streak is showing no sign of coming to an end. Thus, the visitors will certainly fancy their chances of victory in Guadalajara on Tuesday.

Javier Aguirre is without Edson Álvarez and top-scorer Raúl Jiménez, so Santiago Giménez will once again be given a chance to stake a claim up front, having scored just six goals for el tri to date.

César Montes and Johan Vásquez form a very solid cenre-back pairing while, in attack, Alexis Vega got the nod over Chucky Lozano against Colombia, so will he keep his place?

Mexico predicted lineup vs Ecuador: (4-3-3): Malagón; J Sánchez, Montes, Vásquez, Gallardo; Ruiz, Lira, Pineda; Lainez, Vega, Giménez.

Mexico player to watch vs Ecuador

Marcel Ruiz of Toluca has been one of the best midfielders in Liga MX this season, looking to establish himself in the national team, so will continue to be key for el Tri.

Meantime, Pervis Estupiñán picked up a knock against USA, so Yaimar Medina could deputise at left-back, while Kendry Páez, currently on loan at Strasbourg from Chelsea, is their superstar attacker.

Ecuador predicted lineup vs Mexico: (4-3-3): Galíndez; Preciado, Ordóñez, Pacho, Medina; Alcívar, Franco, Vite; Yeboah, Páez, Valencia.

Ecuador player to watch vs Mexico

Enner Valencia bagged his 48th international goal on the occasions of his 101st cap in Texas on Friday night. He's twice previously netted against Mexico, most recently on target during the 2015 Copa América in Rancagua, and the 35 year old remains Ecuador's talisman in attack.

Mexico vs Ecuador prediction

Given Ecuador's recent result do not tune in anticipating a goal-fest, and we are backing the visitors for victory in Zapopan, given Mexico's mixed recent form: Mexico 0-1 Ecuador.
