Uruguay have won each of their last three meetings with Mexico, as well as five of their last six encounters, with el Tri's sole victory over los Charrúas during this period a 3-1 victory in Arizona during Copa América Centenario in 2016.

Mexico vs Uruguay preview

Can Mexico get back to winning ways and claim a statement victory in front of their own supporters? Back in July, when el Tri retained their CONCACAF Gold Cup title, beating rivals United States 2-1 in the final in Houston, supporters were feeling optimistic again ahead of a World Cup on home soil. Now though, not so much. In September, Javier Aguirre's side played out a pair of friendly draws, held to a goalless game by Japan in Oakland, before Santiago Giménez's stoppage time equaliser salvaged a share of the spoils against Korea Republic in Nashville.

Then, last month, Mexico began their double-header by being absolutely crushed 4-0 by Colombia in Arlington, Texas; a potentially confidence shattering result. Three days later, Germán Berterame's opener did help them hold Ecuador to a 1-1 draw in Guadalajara, but this does mean the World Cup co-hosts are now winless in four, claiming just three victories from their last 16 outings against non-CONCACAF opposition. So, can Aguirre's team lift morale with a win on Saturday night?

As for Uruguay, they are also World Cup-bound, finishing fourth in the CONMEBOL standings, losing only four of their 18 fixtures. Last month, Marcelo Bielsa decided to take a very experimental squad to Malaysia for a pair of friendlies, but still enjoyed two victories, beating Dominican Republic 1-0 in Kuala Lumpur, before a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan three days later.

Now, los Charrúas' A-team are back together, also set to take on United States at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Tuesday. Uruguay won the World Cup in 1930 and 1950, also reaching the semi-finals in 2010, but crashed out in the group stages in Qatar, so are under pressure to do significantly better next summer. Here, la Celeste will fancy their chances of an away win at Estadio Corona.

Mexico team news

Javier Aguirre is without Jorge Sánchez, Gerardo Arteaga, Julián Araújo, Carlos Rodríguez, Luis Romo, Luis Chávez, Alexis Vega, Julián Quiñones and Milan striker Santiago Giménez.

Midfielder Gilberto Mora, who starred at the Gold Cup as a 16 year old, is back in the squad so could start alongside the slightly more experienced captain Edson Álvarez.

Mexico predicted lineup vs Uruguay: (4-3-3): Malagón; Reyes, Montes, Vásquez, Gallardo; Álvarez, Mora, Sánchez; Lozano, Pineda; Jiménez.

Mexico player to watch vs Uruguay

Raúl Jiménez has 43 international goals to his name, chasing down Chicharito Hernández's all-time record of 52. The Fulham front-man netted against Uruguay during a 4-1 defeat in Houston seven years ago, so will he have more cause for celebration after this rematch?

Uruguay team news

Most of Marcelo Bielsa's stars are back, after sitting out the October window, albeit Fede Valverde, Lucas Torreira and Darwin Núñez do miss out, while Celtic left-back Marcelo Saracchi suffered a rather bad injury against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

In goal, with no Franco Israel nor Sergio Rochet, it is expected that Santiago Mele, who plays in Liga MX, will earn only an eighth cap. In contrast, captain José María Giménez will win his 97th, on course to become only Uruguay's ninth member of the 100 club.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta

Giorgian de Arrascaeta is the top-scorer in the squad with 12, while Premier League-based trio Santiago Bueno, Manuel Ugarte and Rodrigo Bentancur could also start.

Uruguay predicted lineup vs Mexico: (4-2-3-1): Mele; Varela, Araújo, Giménez, Olivera; Bentancur, Ugarte, Pellistri, de Arrascaeta, Nández; Aguirre.

Uruguay player to watch vs Mexico

When he was coming through at Manchester United, Facundo Pellistri was very highly-rated but never made the breakthrough, now with Panathinaikos in Greece. Nevertheless, the winger's pace is a key attribute to this team so, having bagged his first-ever international goal against Mexico in Denver last year, can he add to this tally?

Mexico vs Uruguay prediction

Despite the fact they are depleted, we are backing Uruguay for victory in Torreón, likely to be too strong for a generally pretty average Mexico team, even away from home: Mexico 0-2 Uruguay.
