AC Milan has been busy in the transfer market and looks set on steering next season in a different direction. After securing Luka Modric, the club is now deep in talks to bring in Danish forward Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United. According to journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic, the offer on the table is for a one-year loan worth €5 million, with a purchase option set at €35 million when the deal ends. The move shows the board’s determination to raise the squad’s level and put Milan back among the main contenders in Serie A.

Hojlund’s situation at Manchester United

At just 22, Hojlund has found his playing time cut following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. Last season, he featured in 52 matches and scored 10 goals, contributing to United’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup victories. He was signed from Atalanta in 2023 for €75 million, arriving in English soccer as a major investment. But with fresh competition and changes in the squad, his minutes have become limited. For Milan, his past experience in Serie A and his international track record stand out. For Hojlund, going back to Italy would be a chance to regain a consistent run as a starter in a team determined to rebuild.

Pressure and need for reinforcements at Milan

Finishing eighth in last season’s Serie A with 63 points left Milan out of European competitions and turned up the pressure on both the board and the coaching staff. The club has started reshaping its squad, mixing seasoned veterans with young talent. Modric has arrived to lead and organize the midfield, while Hojlund is viewed as a way to boost the attack and serve as another option alongside Mexican striker Santiago Giménez.

The hunt for reinforcements makes it clear that the goal is to get back into the Champions League race quickly and close the gap on rivals like Inter Milan, Juventus and Napoli in the battle for the top spots.

Interest in Hojlund has even received public backing from Fabio Capello. The former Milan coach told Sky Italia he knows the player well and pointed out that Hojlund put in strong performances despite a dip in form at United. “I know Hojlund, he played very well. He dropped off a bit at United, even though he did some very good things. Milan would be a big challenge for him. I think his age and a coach like Massimiliano Allegri can give him a lot,” Capello said.

The words of a Rossoneri icon carry weight. His support adds credibility to the negotiations and strengthens the feeling that this could turn into a deal benefiting both the player and the club.
