Mozambique won the first-ever meeting between these two countries in 1983, but Cameroon have won all seven subsequent encounters, scoring 21 goals and conceding only three. This will be their first-ever encounter at the AFCON finals.
Mozambique vs Cameroon preview
Both of these two sides know they will be involved in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages to commence 2026, so will either enjoy a New Year's Eve victory at Grand Stade d'Agadir?
Cameroon are targeting top spot in Group F, following their opening night 1-0 victory over Gabon; Karl Etta Eyong the only scorer after just six minutes. Then, in Sunday night's headliner, the Indomitable Lions drew 1-1 with holders Côte d'Ivoire at Marrakesh Stadium, equalising via an own goal mere moments after les Éléphants had gone in front.

To say that Cameroon's preparations for this tournament were chaotic would be an understatement. After seeing their World Cup hopes come to an end in last month's play-offs, federation president Samuel Eto'o abruptly sacked manager Marc Brys on the eve of AFCON, after the Belgian himself had submitted a squad to CAF that contained countless notable omissions. Now led by David Pagou, they are targeting a sixth Cup of Nations title, the most-recent of their five triumphs coming in 2017. For the Indomitable Lions to claim top spot in this section, they must better Ivory Coast's result simultaneously, and finishing first would see them, more than likely, face Burkina Faso in the last 16, rather than taking on South Africa, so it is a prize worth fighting for.
Mozambique meantime are less concerned about such permutations, given that just reaching the knockout phase is a monumental achievement. Chiquinho Conde's team narrowly lost their opener against Côte d'Ivoire 1-0 in Marrakesh, before pulling off an historic upset at the weekend. Faisal Bangal, Geny Catamo and then Diogo Calila were all on target as the Mambas beat Gabon 3-2.

This thrilling victory guarantees Mozambique's spot in the knockout phase, set to take on either Nigeria and Senegal, assuming they remain in third, which could of course change. Before this tournament, the Mambas had never won an AFCON match, appearing at the competition for the sixth time, so will commence 2026 by featuring in the knockouts for the first time ever. Here, Cameroon are expected to prevail in Agādīr on New Year's Eve.

Reinildo Mandava, goalkeeper Ernan Siluane, Witi and Alfons Amade must all be careful because a yellow card would rule them out of the last 16 tie.
