Newcastle have won seven of their last nine meetings with Fulham, while the Cottagers have won only five of 20 visits to Tyneside since 1982, albeit one of these wins did come in February.

Newcastle vs Fulham preview

Can the Carabao Cup holders keep alive their hopes of another Wembley date? Back in March, Newcastle United beat Liverpool 2-1 in the final of this competition, thereby capturing major domestic silverware for the first time in 70 years. More broadly, this is the fifth season out of the last six that the Magpies have reached at least the quarter-finals in this competition, enjoying home wins over Bradford and Tottenham to date this time round.

However, spirits among the Geordie faithful are not exactly sky-high coming into this tie. On Sunday, the Magpies were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby, with Nick Woltemade scoring a spectacular own goal at the Stadium of Light. Eddie Howe's side have still only won once in eight Premier League away games thus far, also conceding a late goal at the BayArena in the Champions League a week ago, thereby frustratingly held to a 2-2 draw. At home however, Newcastle remain imperious, winning nine out of 13 across all competitions at St James' Park, beaten only by Liverpool, Barcelona and Arsenal, thereby firm favourites to progress.

Fulham meantime were themselves beaten 2-1 on Tyneside just 53 days ago, Bruno Guimarães with a stoppage time winner that afternoon, hoping for a different outcome this time. This is the fourth consecutive season in which the Cottagers have reached the quarter-finals of a domestic cup competition, beating Bristol City, Cambridge United and then Wycombe Wanderers on penalties, chasing the club's illusive first-ever major trophy.

In the Premier League, Fulham won at Turf Moor for the first time in 74 years on Saturday, thanks to goals from Emile Smith Rowe, Calvin Bassey and then Harry Wilson. That made it back-to-back away wins for Marco Silva's side, propelling them up to 13th, now seven points clear of danger. Here, can Fulham continue their improved form on the road and eliminate the Carabao Cup holders?

So, Fabian Schär will come into defence with Aaron Ramsdale donning the gloves, while Howe does have options in midfield and out-wide; Joelinton, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy among those hoping to return to the lineup.

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Fulham: (4-3-3): Ramsdale; Livramento, Thiaw, Schär, Hall; Joelinton, Ramsey, Willock; Murphy, Wissa, Barnes.

Newcastle player to watch vs Fulham

Yoane Wissa has come off the bench during each of the last three matches, making his long-awaited Newcastle debut after suffering a knee injury in September. Set to start for the first time, can he add to his tally of four EFL Cup goals, having netted twice in his last four meetings with Fulham?

Fulham team news

Marco Silva is without injured duo Ryan Sessegnon and Rodrigo Muniz, while Nigerian trio Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Samu Chukwueze have all departed for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Antonee Robinson

In better news, Antonee Robinson started on Saturday, doing so in the Premier League for the first time all season due to a knee issue, a major boost, but will he be fit enough to start here too?

Fulham predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (4-2-3-1): Leno; Tete, Andersen, Cuenca, Castagne; Berge, Lukić, Wilson, Smith Rowe, Traoré; Jiménez.

Fulham player to watch vs Newcastle

Harry Wilson has been on fire of late, bagging three goals and three assists across his last four Premier League matches, so can he now net at St James' Park for the first time in six years?

Newcastle vs Fulham prediction

We cannot see any other outcome from this tie than a Newcastle victory, likely to make home advantage count against a depleted Fulham and reach the last four: Newcastle United 2-0 Fulham.
