Newcastle United are targeting a fourth successive victory over Tottenham Hotspur, something they last achieved in 2008. Spurs have also lost each of their last three visits to Tyneside, conceding 12 goals, despite having lost only one of eight outings at St James' Park beforehand.

Newcastle vs Tottenham preview

These two clubs both ended long waits for silverware earlier this year. Newcastle United, by capturing this particular prize, won domestic silverware for the first time since 1955, while Tottenham's Europa League success was their first major trophy since they were last League Cup winners in 2008. Here though, one will see their hopes of a March Wembley date go up in flames.

Newcastle United began the defence of their trophy by swatting aside Bradford City 4-1 last month, with both Joelinton and William Osula bagging braces. More broadly, Eddie Howe's team continue to be strong at home, including hammering Benfica 3-0 in the Champions League a week ago.

Meantime, in the Premier League, the Magpies have won three of their last four on Tyneside, following Saturday's 2-1 victory over Fulham, with Bruno Guimarães snatching victory right at the death. Away from home meantime, the Toon Army are still yet to see their side win a league match, drawing the first three 0-0, before a 2-1 defeat at Brighton. That is something they'll look to put right at West Ham on Saturday but, before then, can Newcastle make home advantage count in this Carabao Cup tie?

Well, what makes this match-up so intriguing is the fact that Tottenham Hotspur lead the Premier League away table, collecting 13 points out of a possible 15 on the road to date. On Sunday, Spurs became the first senior men's side to leave the Hill Dickinson Stadium with all three points, swatting aside Everton 3-0; Micky van de Ven heading home a pair of first half corners, before Pape Matar Sarr made the points secure towards the end on Merseyside.

At home meantime, Thomas Frank's team have only managed to beat Burnley thus far, drawing with rock-bottom Wolves, while beaten by Bournemouth and Aston Villa in front of their supporters. Despite this, the Lilywhites are third, with games against Chelsea, Manchester United and then Arsenal up next. Before all of that, Frank will not want to crash out of the EFL Cup with a whimper, having smashed Doncaster Rovers 3-0 in North London in round three. This though will be a far tougher test, so can Spurs silence the Toon Army, or will the holders march into the quarter-finals?

Newcastle team news

Eddie Howe is without Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall and Yoane Wissa, the latter duo limiting defensive options, although Emil Krafth, Fabian Schär and Jamaal Lascelles could all come into the backline.

Aaron Ramsdale will make just a second appearance for the club in goal, while William Osula's double against Bradford in round three will see him get the nod in attack.

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Tottenham Hotspur: (4-3-3): Ramsdale; Krafth, Schär, Lascelles, Burn; Tonali, Ramsey, Willock; Elanga, Osula, Barnes.

Newcastle player to watch vs Tottenham

Anthony Elanga is still yet to score since joining Newcastle in the summer, thereby left on the bench at the weekend, so will the Swede stake a claim in this one?

Tottenham team news

Thomas Frank travels to Tyneside without Cristian Romero, Ben Davies, Radu Drăgușin, Destiny Udogie, Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, Dejan Kuluševski and Dominic Solanke all due to injury.

Antonín Kinský will get a rare opportunity in goal while, in attack, Randal Kolo Muani led the line for the first time on Sunday, but Richarlison or Mathys Tel could come in here. Archie Gray is likely to start at full-back but, other than that, Frank does not have any senior alternatives in his backline.

Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (4-3-3): Kinský; Gray, van de Ven, Danso, Spence; Bentancur, Palhinha, Matar Sarr; Johnson, Odobert, Tel.

Tottenham player to watch vs Newcastle

Last season's top-scorer Brennan Johnson has not netted since finding the target against Doncaster in the previous round, but will he be Spurs' primary goal threat in this tie?

Newcastle vs Tottenham prediction

This tie is one not to be missed, very tough to call, but we believe Newcastle's imperious home record will win out against Spurs' excellent form on the road: Newcastle United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur.
