Newcastle United are unbeaten in seven meetings with Wolverhampton Wanderers, seeking a fourth successive victory over Wolves for the first time in 119 years.

Newcastle vs Wolves preview

After a very slow start to the season, can Newcastle United claim their first victory of the campaign? A fortnight ago, Eddie Howe's team were held to a very dull goalless draw by Leeds United at Elland Road, neither side ever really coming close to making the breakthrough. As a result, both of the Magpies' away matches have produced goalless draws, also leaving Villa Park with a point, having suffered that devastating, last-gasp 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Liverpool in-between.

Now that the transfer window has closed, Howe will hope the season can start in earnest for his side, especially considering they'll commence their Champions League campaign with a visit from Spanish domestic treble winners Barcelona on Thursday. Before then, can Newcastle claim their first Premier League victory of the season in this one on Tyneside?

Given that, Wolverhampton Wanderers will be welcome guests, considering they sit rock-bottom of the Premier League, the only side yet to get off the mark. Vítor Pereira's team began the campaign by being steamrollered 4-0 by Manchester City, before a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth, in which Toti Gomes was sent off shortly after half time for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Last time out, Wolves did at least score their first league goals of the campaign, but were still beaten 3-2 by Everton at Molineux, with Hwang Hee-chan and then Rodrigo Gomes ultimately on target in vain. Last season, Pereira came in and saved the Old Gold from relegation, taking over in December with Wolves in the relegation zone, before winning ten of 22 matches. This time, given that the newly-promoted clubs appear stronger, Wolves' eight-year stay in the top division could be under serious threat, hence why Newcastle have to be strong favourites to prevail at St James' Park.

Newcastle team news

The Alexander Isak saga is now over, the Swede getting his wish by joining Liverpool, so his two replacements Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa both set to debut here; will they be deployed up front together?

Elsewhere, Joelinton is sidelined, Jacob Ramsey is a doubt and Anthony Gordon remains suspended, following his red card against Liverpool. With Sven Botman hobbling off at Elland Road, Malick Thiaw could be in line to start for Newcastle for the very first time.

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Wolverhampton Wanderers: (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Schär, Livramento; Guimarães, Tonali, Ramsey; Elanga, Woltemade, Barnes.

Newcastle player to watch vs Wolves

Nick Woltemade scored 17 goals for Stuttgart last season and was the top-scorer during the under-21 Euros during the summer with six, so can he mark his Newcastle debut with a goal?

Wolves team news

Wolves signed striker Tolu Arokodare on deadline day, joining from Genk, having scored 23 goals last season, so will the Nigerian be thrown in for his debut?

This could be a necessity because usual striker Jørgen Strand Larsen is an injury doubt; Newcastle had three bids rejected for the Norwegian, which would be an interesting subplot should he feature. Ladislav Krejčí could be another debutant, having arrived from Girona.

Wolverhampton Wanderers predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (5-2-2-1): José Sá; Tchatchoua, Krejčí, Toti, Agbadou, Møller Wolfe; André, João Gomes, Bellegarde, Arias; Arokodare.

Wolves player to watch vs Newcastle

Jhon Arias is another of Wolves' exciting summer signings, arriving from Fluminense having scored against Ulsan HD during the Club World Cup, so can he fire the Old Gold to a much needed victory?

Newcastle vs Wolves prediction

As already mentioned, we are backing Newcastle United for a comfortable victory here, likely to kick-start their season, while Wolves are very short on quality: Newcastle United 2-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers.
