New York City FC may be close to making a strategic decision involving one of its young assets. Julián Fernández, a 21-year-old Argentine forward, has entered the radar of São Paulo FC, a Brazilian giant that is weighing the possibility of a loan move. Talks are still in the early stages, but they already involve the player’s representatives and officials from the City Football Group.

Signed in 2023 after standing out with Vélez Sarsfield, Julián Fernández arrived in the United States as a significant investment, valued at around €6 million. Since then, he has logged 77 official appearances for NYCFC, posting seven goals and seven assists.

The role of Julián Fernández in NYCFC’s project

Inside New York City FC, Julián has always been viewed as a player with upside, though still a work in progress. Left-footed, quick, and versatile, he’s most comfortable operating out wide, both on the left and the right, but has also been used closer to the middle, attacking gaps and finishing in tight spaces. His mobility is one of the traits most valued by the coaching staff.

Despite being well regarded internally, Julián Fernández has often filled a more functional role than a starring one, even as fans continue to see him as a player with clear potential. Even so, his performances were enough to earn him a spot among the most promising young players in MLS at the end of 2025.

A loan as a strategy for both sides

São Paulo’s interest emerges right in this context. The Brazilian powerhouse is dealing with a serious political crisis, including the impeachment of its club president. With the focus firmly on what happens on the field, Julián Fernández appeals to head coach Hernán Crespo, who is also Argentine. Looking at the situation, New York City FC discussing a loan doesn’t mean giving up on the player, but rather considering whether time in another competitive environment could speed up his development. Under contract through December 2027 and with an estimated market value of €4 million according to Transfermarkt, Julián remains a valuable asset within the group.

From the Brazilian side, the goal is to make the move work without a permanent transfer, respecting financial limits and internal turmoil. From the MLS side, the question is whether a temporary exit could bring technical and sporting returns over the medium term. Despite the initial talks, no decision has been made.
