Atletico Madrid knock out Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey
Atletico Madrid were looking for revenge having lost to Real Madrid in the semifinal of the Spanish Super Cup when they squared off in the Copa del Rey.
The outcome this time around favored Los Colchoneros.
Atletico Madrid struck first in the 39th minute as Antonio Rudiger's poor clearance went backwards toward Samuel Lino who finished deftly past Lunin. Just like in their previous encounter, Diego Simeone's side struck first.
Also, like last time, Real Madrid responded quickly.
In what looked to be an ordinary cross into the box off a free kick, Jan Oblak's effort to punch the ball away went completely awry, resulting in an own goal and allowed Real Madrid to equalize before the half.
The break was a sigh of relief for the home side as they were being overrun by Real Madrid in the final minutes of the opening half.
The score would remain level until the 57th minute where another defensive error cost Real Madrid. Another cross into the box was deflected, ending in an awkward position between Lunin and Rudiger. The goalkeeper tried to clear it away only for it to hit off Rudiger as Alvaro Morata took full advantage to put his team ahead.
it seemed like Atletico Madrid had things under control as they managed to keep Los Blancos at bay once they took the lead. But Real Madrid's belief and determination came through once again in the 83rd minute as Jude Bellingham found Joselu who simple needed to guide his header to once again draw the game level.
Real Madrid could have won the game in stoppage time as an attempt to clear the ball ricocheted off Joselu and sailed agonizingly over the bar.
The two teams headed into extra time with Real Madrid carrying some momentum. For Atletico Madrid, it was going to take something special for them to be able to break the deadlock.
Antoine Griezmann answered that call.
Vinicius Jr. was unable to properly control the ball, which fell to Griezmann. The Brazilian tried to keep track with Griezmann but the Frenchman eluded him as he made his way inside the box. Through a rather tough angle, Griezmann guided the ball past Lunin as the CÃvitas Metropolitano went into a frenzy.
"A magical football player like Griezmann appeared," Simeone said. "He beat Vinicius, who is very quick, in a long race and put the ball in the top corner.
"Antoine scored a spectacular goal, perhaps it's the best we've seen. We are lucky to have him here and that he wants to be here. I hope he can bring us many more nights like t his one."
Rodrigo Riquelme put the match to rest with a fourth goal in the 119th minute as Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 4-2 to advance to the next round of the Copa del Rey.
It was a hard-earned victory for Los Colchoneros with their best player coming through when the team needed him most.
