After a successful season on loan where he became an integral figure in PSV Eindhoven winning the Eredivisie title, Sergiño Dest has completed a move to PSV on a permanent basis.

Barcelona confirmed the move on their official club website.

"FC Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Sergiño Dest," the statement said. "FC Barcelona retains a percentage of any future sale."

In other words, the only thing Barcelona get in exchange is the aforementioned percentage of a future sale.

Barcelona did include an option to buy when they made the initial loan to PSV of 10 million euros. In all likelihood, the Catalan side would have gotten it had Dest not suffered a significant injury where he tore his ACL. It's this injury that all but enabled PSV to get Dest basically on a free transfer.

Regardless, an exit from Barcelona was the only outcome despite Dest still having a contract with the club.

He arrived from Ajax in 2020 and becemase the first player from the United Stattes to play for the club. There was much fanfare regarding his arrival and made his debut under Ronald Koeman. However, he slowly began to lose prominence as his defending left a lot to be desired.

When Xavi Hernandez took over, the former club legend did not have Dest in his plans. So much so that they opted to sign Dani Alves to captain the right-back position.

Dest spent the last two seasons on loan. He was with AC Milan the season before joining PSV.

For Barcelona, the move means they can remove Dest's wages off their books. For Dest, despite the injury, it's a fresh start back in a league where he has found success.
