Pep Guardiola's Manchester City picked up their first unofficial title of the season after beating Manchester United in penalties to claim the Community Shield.
Manchester United pulled ahead in the 82nd minute thanks to Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine forward showed his abilities as he dipped inside from the right and unleashed a shot that Ederson was unable to stop.
With a late goal and Manchester City having shown very little before that, it seemed like the Red Devils were on their way to another win over their city rivals.
But Bernardo Silva, who came on as a substitute, headed in from near the penalty spot to equalize for Man City.
While some downplay the significance of the Community Shield, Silva's celebration showed how much the goal meant to him considering the opponent.
Tied at the end of 90 minutes, the game went to penalties. Silva missed his penalty but was bailed out by Ederson a couple of penalties later when he saved Jadon Sancho's attempt. Jonny Evans misses his penalty as the Man United center-back skied his attempt. Manuel Akanji had the opportunity to win it for his side and did not miss.
"I let the others shoot first because obviously when you miss your last penalty, you don't go with so much confidence into the next one," Akanji said. "I had a good feeling.
"Maybe if I didn't take it I would have had to wait even longer if somebody else had missed in front of me. I tried it yesterday in training and told Eddie I was going to go down the middle and went it."
The win for City was a bit of revenge as the last time these two teams faced off was in the final of the FA Cup with United winning it this time around.
"We're happy to start the season in the way we have and obviously there's a lot to come," Ruben Dias said. "It's another trophy and we're always happy to collect trophies. We've just had a long season and we still don't have a full squad back but it is very good for us to start this way.
"It's very different circumstances to the FA Cup final but it's a final and we love to win finals. The way we played, conceding a goal but then to make it 1-1, I'm very proud of all of us and very happy with the win."
City were without the players that took part in EURO 2024. Rodri's absence was very noticeable but City got it done in the end against Manchester United.
The next time these two play a game, it'll be the first of the Premier League season with Manchester United hosting Fulham and Manchester City traveling to take on Chelsea.
