Kylian Mbappé scores his first LaLiga goals in Real Madrid's win over Real Betis
It took longer than he, and many, would have expected but Kylian Mbappé scored his first two goals for Real Madrid in their 2-0 win over Real Betis.
However, the win was anything but straightforward.
As has been the case for much of this season so far, Madrid were held at bay during the first half by Real Betis. The unease was palpable at the Santiago Bernabeu with the home supporters growing restlesss. So much so that there were boos when the teams went into the half goalless.
The breakthrough for Mbappé and Madrid finally came in the 76th minute. Federico Valverde backheeled a pass to Mbappé inside the box. Having beaten the offside trap, he neatly slotted home past Rui Silva.
"The pressure I have is to adapt to the team," Mbappé said after the match. "I've scored goals all my career, I'll score goals for sure. The goals will come. Three games are a lot for me, but it's OK, I have the confidence of my teammates."
His second goal was a bit more controversial.
He scored his brace via a penalty. A penalty that caused quite a stir as it appeared Vinicius Jr dived after trying to get past the keeper. There was also a shout for offside in the build up.
The calls went Real Madrid's way and sentenced the game with the second goal.
Again, it still wasn't a convincing win but it was a win nonetheless for Real Madrid. The three points pushes them to second place in LaLiga, four points behind Barcelona who sit in first place.
It was a win they needed to calm the nerves before the international break. A break that comes at a good time for Carlo Ancelotti. The Real Madrid manager has been trying to find a balance and has been unable to so. He'll undoubtedly use the break to try to tweak some things to find that balance.
