Real Madrid confirm worst case scenario on Dani Carvajal injury
Real Madrid's worst fears were confirmed as the club revealed that right-back Dani Carvajal suffered an anterior cruciate ligament in the win over Villarreal.
The injury occurred in the second minute of added time in the second half. In trying to clear the ball, Carvajal's knee struck the thigh of Yeremi Pino, resulting in what looked like an overextension. But the pained reaction from the Real Madrid captain made it evident it was a serious injury.
"Following tests carried out on Dani Carvajal by the Real Madrid Medical Services, the player has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured external collateral ligament and a ruptured popliteus tendon in his right leg. He will undergo surgery in the coming days," the club's statement read.
Carvajal is the latest of notable players who've suffered serious knee injuries so far this season. Among those names include Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Marc Bernal as well as Manchester City's Rodri.
While Real Madrid didn't include a recovery time, it's similar to the injury suffered by Bernal. If the recovery time is any similar, Carvajal will at least miss the remainder of the season.
One of the concerns among Real Madrid supporters was this could be the final image of Carvajal in a Real Madrid uniform. The 32-year-old right-back's contract ends in June 2025. As a sign of good faith, Real Madrid announced they were extending his contract for one more season.
As to whether Real Madrid will sign a replacement, Carlo Ancelotti didn't asnwer that questioned when prompted.
"This isn't the day," he said. "We have a lot of faith in Lucas Vazquez. During this break we'll have time to talk about it. The market is closed, there aren't a lot of options."
