The trip to Udine represented a real nightmare for the Rossoneri given their last victory there was three years ago thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's decisive goal.

Among other things, there are two other arguments that could have left AC Milan fans pessimistic.

First, Udinese has only gotten two victories in the current championship, one of which was at AC Milan in the first round. Secondly, manager Stefano Pioli had not yet beaten the opposing coach Gabriele Cioffi in previous matches.

The start of the match confirmed what one would have expected. In fact, AC Milan preferred prolonged ball possession which in some moments reached a peak of 70% while Udinese waited very deep, looking for the ball to be recovered or for errors in the opponent's setup phase to start their main offensive strategy: the counterattack.

However, the Rossoneri were careful not to make mistakes and instead created repeated actions to score, in particular with the involvement of French striker Olivier Giroud.

After about half an hour AC Milan took the lead with a rapid and repeated action on the left following a pass from Theo Hernandez who provided an assist in the center of the penalty area to Ruben Loftus-Cheek who scored the provisional goal advantage for I Rossoneri.

Then something reprehensible happened. Mike Maignan, AC Milan's French goalkeeper, moved away from his own goal and left the pitch, comforted by both his teammates and his opposing colleagues, after repeated racist chants coming from the corner.

The referee, Fabio Maresca, following the Federation's regulations, decided to temporarily suspend the match.

After the suspension the match resumed.

The rhythm of the game was inevitably broken by what happened and anything could happen. In fact, a brilliant individual play by Lazar Samardžić, Udinese's talented attacking midfielder, brought the game back into balance thanks to a very precise shot.

The second half reopened without tactical changes by either team.

The match continued without dangerous actions until an egregious defensive error by the AC Milan defense allowed Udinese winger Florian Thauvin to find space in the box and he beat Maignan from close range andto give Udinese the lead.

Suddenly, it looked like the Rossoneri's nightmares were materializing again. So coach Pioli made some changes to the tactical structure, inserting an extra attacker.

Following the change, Udinese tried to take advantage of the opponent's imbalance through two counterattacks but Maignan neutralized both.

Just when the match was about to end in Udinese's favor, the Rossoneri substitutes become protagonists.
