Serie A: José Mourinho sacked by AS Roma

The Portuguese coach was unable to repeat in Italy the extraordinary results of his period as coach of FC Internazionale, which culminated in the historic "Triplete".

1. An unexpected but perhaps inevitable farewell

The legendary Portuguese coach, fresh from the recent 3-1 defeat suffered away at San Siro against AC Milan, is paying for disappointing results. In fact, the Giallorossi has never proved to be a real contender for the top spot in Seria A, prematurely frustrating one of the objectives set at the beginning of the season, namely access to the next edition of the UEFA Champions League. Moreover, a goal never achieved in the previous two seasons.

Furthermore, in the current edition of the UEFA Europa League, AS Roma finished in second place in their group behind Slavia Praha, certainly not an economically and technically superior opponent.
We could also mention the terrible statistics recorded in the most popular match in the capital, the derby against SS Lazio. In the six matches played, he achieved only one victory, one draw and four defeats.

2. What does José leave behind?

However, the good things done by the "Special One" should not be ignored.

In particular, José Mourinho leaves behind a legacy of excellent achievements at the UEFA competition level, reaching two European finals out of four, the first to do so in the entire history of AS Roma.

In fact, in his first season he won the first edition of the UEFA Europa Conference League. Thus obtaining a trophy that AS Roma had lacked on an international level for over half a century, that is, since the conquest of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in the 1960-1961 season. In the previous season, he led his team to a brilliant run in the UEFA Europa League until the final against Sevilla FC, losing in penalties.

3. Who takes over from Mourinho?

The technical guidance of Roma will be temporarily entrusted to Daniele De Rossi, former footballer and former captain as well as one of the most significant players in the entire history of the club, appearing in second place among the players with the most appearances, behind only to the legend, Francesco Totti.

It is a very risky choice as it is only his second job as a coach among professional clubs. Only time will tell if the club's choice proved to be correct.
