The 2023-24 season has entered its second stretch as clubs look to strengthen their ranks in the January transfer window ahead of a busy second half.
While there has not been much movement with the crippling effects of FFP, things could heat up in the coming months with plenty of players having their contracts ending at the end of the current season.
So let's take a look at 10 players who could become free agents in 2024.
10. Mats Hummels
Borussia Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels is nearing the end of his one-year contract extension which he signed last summer. The German World Cup-winner has represented Die Schwarzgelbern nearly 500 times over two spells and is the last active Dortmund player to have won the Bundesliga title, way back in 2011-12.
Hummels continues to be a key part of Dortmund's plans, playing every minute of their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign as Dortmund topped the Group of Death comprised of PSG, Newcastle United and AC Milan.
His 5.2 tackles and interceptions per game rank him among Europe's top 5 percentile of defenders. He remains a potent passer from the back, completing 88% of his passes along with 5.36 progressive carries per 90. Hummels would be desirable for any club looking to add experience to their back line. Dortmund need to move quickly or worse, risk losing one of their legends to another European giant on a free.
